Last Updated

An unfortunate accident occurred recently at a hotel in Puerto Morelos where three members of a tourist family, including a minor, were electrocuted when entering the swimming pool to cool off during their spring holiday vacation getaway.

The family of travelers was enjoying their vacation getaway for the spring travel season in Puerto Morelos when the youngest member of the family decided to take a dip in the pool to cool off from the warm sunshine.

As the 14-year-old girl entered the pool, she immediately started showing signs of being electrocuted in the water.

The mother, alarmed at what she was seeing, jumped into the pool to save the child and suffered the same electrocution fate. The father followed in to try to save the mother and daughter and also was suffering the effects of the electrocution.

Lifeguards sprung into action at the hotel and cut the power to the area.

They immediately worked to rescue the family in the water.

Not the First Time

Strangely enough, this is not the first time an electrocution incident like this has occurred in the Mexican Caribbean.

Back in 2015, a Canadian couple was electrocuted and killed in an in-suite jacuzzi at a resort hotel in Playa del Carmen.

They actually were in town for their daughter’s wedding when the incident occurred at some time between 1:00 and 3:00 am in the morning.

What Travelers Need to Know

There really is no way that the travelers could have been forewarned about the incident.

It was an unfortunate accident that took place and the investigation by municipal authorities will uncover what occurred and actions to take to avoid a similar incident in the future.

However, it does provide another good reminder about the need for traveler insurance when visiting the Mexican Caribbean.

It can provide an important peace of mind for medical care coverage in the event that accidents do occur while on vacation.

My husband and I were at the resort when this occurred. We gave the people doing resuscitation our daughter’s epi-pen which was used on the child. The child was much younger than 14 (maybe 7-9 years old) and male. Also it was closer to 6:30 pm.

No surprise, I was few weeks ago in HolBox in one of those beach front hotels, not cheap $4000MX and up a night and the electrical wires where all just hanging on the wall, painted over so you couldn't see if were hot. By the way a couple of years ago they had a big fire at the Casa la Tortuga. Plumbing in the shower stitched together with pieces of burlap bags, leaking all over. That's why when I can I stick with Hilton or other American chain hotels.(not in HolBox). That's a lack of state control so common in Mexico. I took pictures of all of that just in case.
