Cancun is still dealing with the effects of Hurricane Helene, which blew through the destination as a Category 1 storm last week.
Now, just a week later, there’s the possibility of other storms developing, one of which is in the Caribbean Sea.
Due to the weather conditions these tropical disturbances may cause, boat tours have been canceled, and several beaches in Cancun have been closed until further notice.
Here’s what travelers need to know.
The Port Is Closed
As of Monday, September 30th, at 9:00 a.m., Cancun’s oldest port, Puerto Juarez, has been closed to smaller boats.
These are boats measuring less than 40 feet in length, and the suspension of navigation includes both incoming and outgoing activity.
The suspension is until further notice, and the port will likely stay closed until further information about these tropical disturbances is provided.
Boat Tours Canceled
In addition to being closed to navigation, Puerto Juarez has canceled boat tours departing from the port.
Puerto Juarez is a popular location for ferries to Isla Mujeres and other boat tours to the island.
Officials say that the suspension is just a precaution.
Expect It To Rain
Precautions are being taken because despite not knowing exactly what these tropical disturbances will ultimately do, rains are expected over the next several days.
Additionally, winds are expected to be between around 10 and 15 mph, with stronger gusts at times.
Lightning is also possible and a factor that likely contributed to the cancelation of boat tours.
Closed Beaches In Cancun
Officials have also closed several beaches in Cancun, all of which are in the famous Cancun Hotel Zone.
Beaches that are closed will have a red beach warning flag, which means that swimming is prohibited.
Beaches that currently have red warning flags are:
- Playa Delfines
- Playa Ballenas
- Playa Marlin
- Playa Chac Mool
- Playa Gaviota Azul
- Playa Caracol
- Playa Pez Volador
- Playa Langosta
Beaches With Yellow Warning Flags
There are a few beaches where swimming is currently still allowed, but they have yellow warning flags posted.
The yellow beach warning flag is used to warn beachgoers to swim with extreme caution, due to heightened risk caused by weather conditions.
Beaches that currently have yellow flags posted include:
- Playa Tortugas
- Playa Las Perlas
- Playa Del Nino
The Importance Of Heeding The Flag Warnings
Warning flags are used in Cancun to indicate the current conditions at the various beaches throughout the destination.
Each beach is different, and while one may be open, swimming might be prohibited at the next one.
This is why it’s important to look for the flag at each beach you visit in Cancun.
In addition to the red and yellow flags, there are three others to look out for.
A green flag means that the beach is open and safe for swimming, a black flag means that the beach is closed entirely and off-limits, and a white flag means that dangerous marine life may be present.

If you’ll be traveling to Cancun during hurricane season, which begins in June and ends in November, it’s a good idea to get travel insurance.
