If you have a flight booked to Mexico anytime in the next six weeks, you need to pay very close attention to exactly what is packed in your suitcase. The country is officially gearing up for the massive rush of the 2026 World Cup, and millions of international soccer fans are flooding across the border and filling up flights to major vacation hubs. Because of this historic wave of visitors coming into the country, security at all major airports and border crossings is at an absolute maximum right now.

To help travelers avoid totally ruining their trips before they even leave the airport, the U.S. Embassy just issued a very specific, brand-new travel alert. The rules they laid out are incredibly strict, and local authorities are not messing around with warnings or second chances right now. If you break these rules, even by total accident, you are going to face massive fines or genuine jail time.

Here is exactly what the U.S. Embassy wants every single traveler to know before they zip up their luggage and head to the airport for their Cancun vacation.

Leave The Protection At Home

First and foremost, do not bring any weapons or ammunition into Mexico. This sounds like common sense to most vacationers, but it trips up a surprising number of people who drive across the border or fly with bags they use regularly back home for hunting or going to the shooting range.

The U.S. Embassy is making it crystal clear: bringing a gun or ammo into the country is a very serious crime. It does not matter if you have a valid concealed carry permit in your home state, and it does not matter if you are a responsible owner back home. Your United States gun ownership permits are completely invalid the second you cross into Mexican territory. If customs officers find a weapon or even a single stray bullet rattling around in the bottom of your bag, you will face severe penalties and an immediate trip to a local jail.

Medical Prescriptions

The second major warning revolves around drug possession and importation. You absolutely cannot bring any illegal substances into the country, and this strictly includes medical marijuana.

Even if you live in a U.S. state where marijuana is completely legalized, and even if you have a legitimate, doctor-issued medical permit, it is highly illegal to bring it into Mexico. The border agents do not care about your local laws back home. If you are caught trying to bring in any form of marijuana—whether it is flower, edibles, or concentrated oils—it can easily lead to long jail sentences or devastating financial fines. Do not try to hide it in your checked luggage, as the scanning equipment and canine units are highly active. If you need specific everyday medications, the Embassy strongly advises reviewing their official travel guidance to ensure your basic prescriptions are actually legal south of the border before you pack them.

The Massive Vaping Ban

This is the rule that catches the most everyday travelers completely off guard. It is entirely illegal to bring e-cigarettes and vaping liquids into Mexico.

The country passed a strict ban on the import and sale of all vaping products a few years ago. If you pack your favorite vape pen or a few extra pods in your carry-on bag, customs agents will flag them during your luggage scan. Best case scenario, they just throw your expensive vape straight in the trash and give you a harsh warning. Worst case scenario, you are hit with a massive fine right there in the terminal before you even make it outside to your shuttle. Do yourself a massive favor and leave the e-cigarettes sitting on your kitchen counter at home.

Check Every Single Pocket

The Embassy specifically noted that “I forgot it was in there” is not going to save you from getting in trouble. They are strongly advising everyone to thoroughly check their bags, backpacks, and clothing pockets before leaving for the airport.

If you use a specific backpack for hunting or going to the range, make absolutely sure there is not a stray shell buried in a side pocket. If you normally carry a vape in your favorite jacket, double-check the pockets before you pack it in your suitcase. Bringing in banned items will result in serious penalties, even if it was a completely honest accident. Customs agents do not deal in accidents; they just deal with what is actually sitting inside your bag when it goes through the x-ray machine. Take ten extra minutes while packing to save yourself a massive headache.

Specific Advice For Cancun & The Mexican Caribbean

If your World Cup travels or summer vacation plans are taking you down to the beaches of Quintana Roo, there is one more specific piece of advice you need to follow.

For anyone heading to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, or anywhere else in the state, the U.S. Embassy strongly recommends downloading the “Guest Assist” app before you land. This is a highly useful, official smartphone app created specifically to help tourists. It provides instant access to emergency services, direct assistance, and reliable information in English. It is a completely free download, and having it sitting on your home screen gives you a massive safety net if you ever need quick help while navigating the Hotel Zone or the busy downtown streets.
