Over 10,000 vaccines are expected to arrive in Quintana Roo this week. The news comes as the province recently expressed concern to the Federal Secretariat of Health for the unfair distribution of vaccine supply after the state was left off the latest distribution list for vaccines.
The tourism capital of Mexico wants to ensure maximum safety for its residents and visitors and is looking to accelerate immunity through the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines.
Earlier this month, Mexico received a shipment of 852,150 vaccines administered by Pfizer, none of which managed to reach Quintana Roo.
In this regard, Governor Joaquin Gonzalez commented: “I think it is very serious that the vaccination program does not have an answer for Quintana Roo and that is the reason for my energetic protest of the situation.”
Accordingly, the Governor met with President Obrador on Friday (3 /5) to discuss the matter. In response, President Obrador promised 10,000 vaccines exclusively to Quintana Roo, stating “there will be no shortage of vaccines, 10,000 vaccines will arrive next week. We will guarantee that they arrive,”.
Mexico began vaccinating healthcare workers in December, following phase two which is currently targeting the elderly. Quintana Roo is looking to expedite the rollout to its residents, starting with the elderly (60 years and above), free of charge.
Meanwhile, Playa del Carmen is expected to collect the majority of vials from the upcoming shipment.
Head of State Health, Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, stated: “We calculate that there are 6,825 vaccines set aside, and as for the information we have, they will be directed to the municipality of Playa del Carmen.”
