Airlines Begin Using Larger Aircraft As Cancun Popularity Soars

If anything says that tourism in Cancun is on the rise, it’s the fact that airlines are beginning to use larger aircraft to transport tourists to the destination.

And that is exactly what’s happening as Cancun’s popularity soars to new heights.

Now, multiple airlines flying from the U.S. and Canada are opting to use larger aircraft as a way to get more tourists to the destination with fewer flights.

The Difference In Aircraft

A number of airlines will start using wider-bodied airplanes for trips to Cancun.

In the U.S., the two airlines that will be operating flights with larger aircraft will be using three different Boeing aircraft for certain routes.

Those aircraft are the Boeing 787-8, the Boeing 787-9, and the Boeing 777-200ER.  The seating capacity for these aircraft are 240, 246, and 314, respectively.

Why Larger Aircraft Are Not Already In Use

Larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 787-8, 787-9, and 777-200ER, as well as the Airbus A330-200 and the Airbus A330-300, are typically used for longer routes.

From many U.S. cities, the trip to Cancun is no more than a few hours.

However, the increase in tourism from the United States to Cancun makes it make sense to use these aircraft that have nearly double the seating capacity.

U.S. Airlines That Will Utilize The Larger Aircraft

There will be two airlines that will use the wider body aircraft for specific routes from the U.S. to Cancun, United Airlines and American Airlines.

United made the announcement back in July that it would upgrade to the larger aircraft for routes from Chicago, Denver, and Houston this winter.

American Airlines is just now announcing its decision to upgrade to larger aircraft on the Dallas-Fort Worth to Cancun route, which is currently the busiest route from the U.S.

The Benefits Of Using Larger Aircraft

By using these larger aircraft for some of the busiest routes from the U.S. to Cancun, airlines can make fewer trips to the destination.

Each airline will offer daily flights on these aircraft for each of the specified routes.

This allows them to reduce flights by at least 1-2 per day by replacing them with one larger aircraft.

American Tourists In Mexico

More than 27 million Americans have already visited Mexico this year.

Cancun receives more American tourists than any other Mexican vacation destination, so a good portion of those tourists arrive at Cancun International Airport.

As more and more Americans vacation in Cancun, it’s not unlikely that we’ll see even more airlines begin using larger aircraft for the busiest routes.

Airlines That Fly To Cancun

Currently, there are 52 airlines that fly to Cancun from various parts of the world and 11 that offer flights from the U.S. to Cancun.

American Airlines is among the airlines with the most flights to the destination, with 18 different routes.

United Airlines currently operates eight routes from the U.S. to Cancun.

Cancun’s Increasing U.S. Airport Connectivity

Airport connectivity from the U.S. to Cancun has significantly increased over the last several years and continues to do so as the destination continues to grow in popularity.

There are currently nonstop flights from 40 different U.S. cities to Cancun International Airport, with multiple daily flights between Cancun and some U.S. cities.

In total, there are hundreds of flights from the U.S. to Cancun every month, proving just how popular the destination is among American travelers.
