Cancun Airport’s New Expansion Will Affect Millions of Travelers. Here’s How.

32 Million. That’s how many travelers will be affected by Cancún’s new airport plans.

According to the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT), the Cancun International Airport will cater to 32 million extra passengers by 2030 as part of a historic 134-billion-peso modernization push.

Before we dive into what’s next, let’s take a look at what’s already been done—and why Cancún’s future is brighter than ever.

Cancun Airport Starts Year With Huge Increase In Passengers - Here's What Travelers Need To Know

Already Improving at Cancún Airport

Cancún’s transformation into Mexico’s second-busiest gateway hasn’t happened by accident.

In 2005, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) invested US$150 million in constructing Terminal 3, which was officially inaugurated in 2007 and introduced six new gates and expanded commercial areas.

Two years later, in October 2009, the airport unveiled a second runway alongside Latin America’s tallest control tower (97 meters), effectively doubling its passenger-handling capacity.

Terminal 4 followed in October 2017, adding nine million seats annually and boosting capacity to over 31 million passengers per year. Those upgrades helped Cancún handle a record-breaking 32.7 million travelers in 2023.

Private-Sector Moves: ASUR’s $400 Million Capacity Push

Even before the federal plan kicked off, ASUR secured environmental approval in late 2023 for a 63-hectare expansion—backed by a budget north of US $400 million.

These private investments dovetail with SICT’s efforts to modernize technological systems, boarding bridges, and security zones, all aimed at reducing taxi-and-wait times.

Why Cancún Is Still King for Travelers

When you think “Caribbean beach escape,” Cancún instantly comes to mind—and for good reason.

The Cancún International Airport is Mexico’s second-busiest airport and the largest in Latin America for international passengers, offering flights to over 100 cities across the Americas and Europe.

Meanwhile, the city’s tourism draw keeps climbing: in 2023, 21 million visitors flocked here, surpassing earlier forecasts. From its pristine beaches and turquoise waters to world-class resorts, vibrant nightlife in the Hotel Zone, and nearby Mayan ruins, Cancún has cultivated an ecosystem that keeps travelers—and airlines—coming back.

What’s Next: SICT’s Historic Modernization Plan

Over the next five years, SICT’s 134-billion-peso sexennial investment will roll out across 62 airports nationwide. For Cancún, this likely means:

  • Expanding and refurbishing terminals to streamline passenger flow
  • Modernizing runways with new pavement, lighting, and taxiways
  • Upgrading security areas, baggage-handling systems, and boarding bridges
  • Implementing sustainability measures—water reuse, solar panels, and energy-efficient HVAC systems

The mixed public-private funding structure is projected to generate over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2030, benefiting not only hoteliers and airlines but also construction firms, technology vendors, and local suppliers.
