For the millions of travelers finalizing their summer vacation plans to Cancun, the city’s Mayor has a clear and powerful message for every single one of them: “We are with you.” In a definitive statement of commitment, the city is vowing to protect its world-famous beaches, ensuring the pristine, white-sand paradise that visitors dream of is the reality they experience upon arrival.
This isn’t just a promise made from behind a desk. This vow was made directly on the sand, as Mayor Ana Paty Peralta personally led a massive, city-wide cleanup effort this past weekend, demonstrating a hands-on approach to safeguarding the region’s most vital asset. For anyone with concerns about beach conditions this summer, this direct action from the city’s top leader is a reassuring sign of Cancun’s dedication.

A Vow Made on the Sand
The promise was turned into immediate action on the shores of Chacmool beach, one of the most popular public beaches in the Hotel Zone. With leadership and a clear example of responsibility, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta joined the front lines, leading an intense sargassum cleaning day alongside city workers and volunteers.

This highly visible effort was part of a simultaneous, coordinated strategy across all of Cancun’s 11 public beaches. It sends a strong message that maintaining the quality, image, and natural appeal of the coastline is the city’s top priority as it enters the critical summer season. This isn’t a task delegated and forgotten; it’s being led from the very top.

A “Collective Crusade” to Protect Paradise
The scale of the daily operation is truly impressive. The Mayor emphasized that this is a “collective crusade against sargassum,” involving a united front of various municipal agencies.
“We are with the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) team, Public Services, and Firefighters, all joining in,” the Mayor stated from Chac Mool beach. To illustrate the effectiveness of this coordinated effort, officials noted that on that day alone, approximately 40 tons of sargassum had been collected by just 10:00 a.m., with cleanup crews working a full twelve hours from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
This comprehensive strategy includes constant monitoring, the use of specialized machinery, and marine barriers designed to mitigate the impact before the seaweed even reaches the shore.

More Than a Cleanup, It’s an Economic Lifeline
Why such an intense, city-wide effort? Because in Cancun, beautiful beaches are more than just a luxury—they are the main driver of the entire tourism economy. Here at The Cancun Sun, we know that the success of tourism is directly tied to the well-being of every family in the region.
Mayor Lezama emphasized this connection, stating that the goal is to strengthen the local and regional economy by supporting suppliers, entrepreneurs, and everyone who makes a living from tourism. Ultimately, ensuring the beaches are pristine is about ensuring that tourism’s success is reflected in the prosperity of the workers and their families.

For travelers, this dedication means they can book their vacations with confidence, knowing that the destination they love is being passionately cared for by the very community that is so proud to call it home.
Happy travels!
