Another report has Cancun listed as one of the top summer travel destinations around the world for Americans this summer.
This time, it’s the popular travel comparison Trivago that has Cancun listed as one of the top destinations – both domestic and international – among American summer travelers.
Tourists Seeking Relaxation
According to the Trivago survey, a majority of travelers found that travel definitely had an impact on their mental health with a full third seeking relaxation in their travel adventure.
This directly connects with what travel research has been showing for the last couple of years. Visitors are looking for wellness, sustainability and nature as part of their vacation getaway experiences.
Additionally, a third of the people in the survey also found that travel allowed them escapism, especially from the stress and drama of everyday life.
It seems like there are few places for escapism and adventure beyond the beaches, islands and the jungles of Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean for American travelers.
Because of this it is not surprising to see Cancun as one of the top beach resort destinations for American summer travelers this upcoming season.
Top 10 Travel Destination
According to the Trivago survey, Americans selected Cancun as the No. 6 travel destination for a summer vacation this year. This survey included both international and domestic locations in the survey.
The top travel destination for what will be a hot desert vacation getaway was Las Vegas. That’s probably because of it having the cheapest room nights of all of the cities on the top ten destinations list at $156.58 per night.
When it comes to top international travel destination, London was No. 4, two places above Cancun. The average hotel room rate for a summer vacation getaway this year was $383.50 per night according to Trivago.
According to a Trivago news release, the survey ran March 20-26 and asked 2,000 American travelers over the age of 18 with a vacation planned in the following 12 months.
Average Room Rate $342
Travelers planning a summer beach vacation getaway to Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean this year are going to have to pay for the experience.
According to the Trivago survey, the average room rate visitors can expect to pay is $342.43 per night for a hotel room in Cancun.
This is a five percent year-over-year room rate increase, according to the travel experts at Trivago.
There were only three cities in the top ten that had year-over-year room average rate increases expected this year and they were all international destinations – London, Playa Bavaro and Cancun.
The room rates were analyzed prior to April 25 for the summer travel period, including June, July, and August.
What Travelers Need to Know
What normally is a slow period of travel to the Mexican Caribbean during the warm and humid summer travel period won’t be this year.
Cancun travelers are going to have to now treat the destination as a year-round travel destination with hotel pricing to match.
While the $342 average room rate is much better than the more than $500 during the peak travel period, it is still a new high rate for the summer travel season. It is a more than five percent increase during a slower travel season.
While the Trivago survey did not look at airfares, many travelers may be able to find some flight deals to Cancun to offset the five percent hotel room rate increase.
The new airport in Tulum has created competition, and fares are competitive for visitors willing to fly to Cancun to find a flight deal instead.
In the end, a vacation to Cancun this year could essentially cost the same as one last year. This is a good sign with American consumers feeling a bit of a pinch in their wallets and pocketbooks.
