The 2025 Summer Travel Index highlights a significant enthusiasm for travel, with a notable 63% of Americans “buzzing with excitement” for the season. And where is much of that excitement directed? This is particularly true for younger generations, with Gen Z and Millennials being 38% more likely to embark on international adventures compared to Gen X and Boomers – and Cancun is perfectly poised to welcome these eager explorers.
While other global destinations like Paris and London also feature on the popularity list for US travelers, they simply can’t outshine the allure of Cancun, which proudly holds the top international position.
Further cementing the Yucatan Peninsula’s magnetic appeal, the nearby Punta Sam (just a stone’s throw from Cancun) has sensationally topped the list of “Fastest Growing International Destinations” for US travelers based on year-over-year growth. This incredible surge in interest shows that the magic of our region continues to captivate more and more visitors, who are perhaps seeking both the renowned attractions of Cancun and the charm of up-and-coming spots within easy reach. So, what’s drawing Americans to Cancun in such record numbers? The Tripadvisor report indicates that a significant 51% of travelers cite “relaxation and rejuvenation” as their primary travel motive. Younger travelers, who are increasingly drawn to Cancun, are particularly keen on booking multiple activities, with Gen Z being more likely to schedule six or more. They’re also more likely to book these unique Cancun experiences in advance. Hot trending experience categories for 2025, like cultural tours, outdoor adventures (think jungle excursions and eco-parks!), and, of course, cruises, sailing, and water tours, are all specialties of Cancun.

When it comes to planning their Cancun escape, it’s interesting to note that while Boomers might ask locals for recommendations, Gen Z is more likely to turn to social media – so keep sharing those stunning Cancun snaps! Accommodation preferences also show variety, with younger travelers often leaning towards vacation rentals, while older generations might favor hotels. Luckily, Cancun offers a fantastic array of both to suit every taste and budget.
While Americans are also exploring domestic locations like Las Vegas and New York City, the allure of an international escape, spearheaded by Cancun, remains incredibly strong.
