Here at The Cancun Sun, we know that travelers from around the world come to Cancun for one primary reason: our world-famous beaches. That stunning ribbon of white sand against impossibly turquoise water is the ultimate vacation dream.
But here’s the secret that first-time visitors might not realize: not all Cancun beaches are the same. In fact, the beach you see on a postcard might be completely different from the one just a mile down the road.

Choosing the wrong beach can mean showing up with your kids to a spot with strong waves, or planning a quiet day of reading only to land in the middle of a beach club party.
The good news? The region’s unique geography is the reason for this amazing variety. And because we want you to have the perfect vacation, we’ve created a brand-new interactive quiz to help you find the exact beach that fits your travel personality.
The Big Secret: Why Cancun’s “7” Shape Changes Everything
The first thing you need to know is that the Cancun Hotel Zone is a 13-mile-long sandbar shaped like the number “7”. This unique shape creates two completely different coastal experiences.
The Top of the “7” (Northern Hotel Zone)
This is the horizontal part of the “7” (running from Kukulcan Km 4 to Km 9). This entire stretch is protected by Isla Mujeres, which sits just across the water and acts as a natural breakwater.
- The Vibe: The result is incredibly calm, shallow, “pool-like” water. The waves are gentle, and the vibe is relaxed.
- Best For: This is the ultimate destination for families traveling with small children or anyone who is a nervous swimmer. Beaches like Playa Langosta (with its playground) and Playa Tortugas (with its lively ferry pier) are the top choices here.

The Side of the “7” (Eastern Hotel Zone)
This is the long, vertical part of the “7” (from Km 9.5 to Km 22). This coast faces the open Caribbean Sea.
- The Vibe: This is where you’ll find those breathtaking, sweeping views of the most vibrant turquoise water you’ve ever seen. The waves are bigger, the surf is more powerful, and the beaches feel vast and epic.
- Best For: This is the postcard-perfect Cancun. It’s home to iconic public beaches like Playa Delfines (with the famous “CANCUN” sign) and great beginner surf spots like Playa Chac Mool.
Don’t Forget the Island Escapes
Just a 30-minute ferry ride away, you have a completely different world. Isla Mujeres offers a laid-back, bohemian vibe that feels a world away from the high-energy Hotel Zone.
It’s home to Playa Norte, which is consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in the world for its powder-soft sand and bathwater-calm sea. But it also has authentic local spots like Playa Lancheros (where you must try the Tikin-Xic fish) and adventure parks like Playa Garrafón with zip-lines and snorkeling.

Which Beach Personality Are You?
With so many options, the key is to find the one that matches your dream vacation. Are you a “Social Butterfly” or a “Serenity Seeker”?
- If you’re a “Social Butterfly,” you crave the high-energy vibe of a beach club, with music, cocktails, and a lively crowd. You belong at Playa Gaviota Azul (Forum Beach), the heart of the party scene.
- If you’re a “Family Pack Leader,” your priority is safety and convenience. The calm, shallow, “pool-like” waters of Playa Langosta are your perfect, worry-free match.
- If you’re an “Authentic Traveler,” you want to escape the tourist bubble. You’ll love the local flavor of Playa Lancheros on Isla Mujeres or the authentic community feel of Playa El Niño in Puerto Juarez.
- If you’re a “Thrill-Seeking Explorer,” you want action. You’ll be happiest learning to ride the gentle waves at Playa Chac Mool or exploring the wild, windswept kiteboarding paradise of Isla Blanca.
- If you’re a “Serenity Seeker,” you just want to unplug. The quiet, romantic sunsets at Playa Sol or the secluded club vibes at Playa Indios on Isla Mujeres are your speed.

It's true the beaches at Cancun, Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen are good but Mexico has lost the war with the sargassum and that makes tourism unhappy and disappointed with the price they have to pay to take a bath in a pool because the beach is full of bad smell and sargassum in the beach. The last time I was in Playa del Carmen 2020 I have to take a ferry to go and enjoy the beach at Cozumel. No good at all!!
