Cancun Hotels Filling Quickly As High Season Begins

Last Updated

As the winter holidays approach, Cancun is gearing up for what is anticipated to be its busiest high season ever.

The main tourist destinations in Quintana Roo State are already experiencing a noteworthy 80% hotel occupancy rate, a significant departure from the low-season figures.

This recovery is particularly pronounced in Cancun and Isla Mujeres, with occupancy levels reported at 80.3% and 80.7%, respectively, according to the Association of Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres.

Right now, 69,424 visitors are vacationing in Cancun and 14,485 in Isla Mujeres, with expectations for a higher influx of visitors from the U.S. and Canada in the next few weeks.

A Winter Hotspot

Winter has always been a busy season for Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean, mainly due to the large number of Canadian and American travelers seeking a sunny escape from the chilly weather back home.

It’s the best time to enjoy Cancun’s paradisiacal beaches, embark on cultural and natural explorations, or simply relax at your all-inclusive.

While this seasonal popularity is consistent, the aftermath of the pandemic has witnessed a significant boom in Cancun’s popularity.

In 2022, it broke records with 30 million visitors, a 19% increase from 2019, the best year before that.

This year, Cancun is poised to shatter records again, with local authorities expecting to surpass the 30 million mark by year-end.

Why Cancun Is Set To Break Tourism Records This High Season

Travel trends in a post-pandemic world have shifted to a preference for luxury experiences despite rising costs.

And when it comes to luxury, Cancun truly delivers, showcasing upscale all-inclusives like the Hyatt Zilara and Le Blanc Resort & Spa, which offer their guests unmatched hospitality and lavish experiences.

While these resorts may be on the higher end of the budget spectrum for some travelers, the extensive variety of options and boutique offerings in Cancun ensures that a luxurious getaway is still within reach without breaking the bank.

Another significant reason behind Cancun’s rising popularity is the fact that it’s getting easier and cheaper to get there, especially from the U.S.

The recent upgrade of Mexico’s aviation security level to category 1 has prompted initiatives to open new routes and increase the number of flights from major airlines.

However, this improved connectivity is not limited to Cancun’s airport alone. The upcoming Tulum airport has already confirmed routes from carriers like United and Delta, further expanding the options for travelers and potentially bringing down costs.

Moreover, the much-anticipated Maya Train is set to enhance connectivity between Cancun and various popular destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, as well as important archeological sites.

This development aligns seamlessly with the growing interest in cultural and ecological tourism, two of the current travel trends the Mexican Caribbean is perfect for.

High Season In Cancun – Tips For Travelers

As enjoyable as a winter Cancun holiday can be, the high season might bring a few downsides, the most notorious being increased costs and crowds.

Fortunately, there are a few strategic ways to navigate these challenges and ensure an exceptional experience during your stay.

Book In Advance: Whether it’s flights, hotels, or tours, securing your reservations well in advance is a smart move. The peak high season kicks off in mid-December, so booking your trip for early December is a great way to save money and escape the crowds.

Plan Your Budget: With prices tending to rise during peak season, it’s crucial to budget accordingly. Be aware of increased costs for flights, accommodations, and activities, and plan your expenses accordingly.

Safety: Cancun is overall a safe city for tourists, but it’s still important to stay vigilant in your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and opt for reliable transportation services.

Transportation: Be prepared for denser traffic during the high season. So, plan for extra travel time, particularly when heading to the airport or popular tourist spots. Consider public transportation options like buses for an efficient and budget-friendly travel experience.

Get Travel Insurance: It’s a good idea to invest in travel insurance, especially during the high season when flight delays and unforeseen circumstances are more likely.
