Over the last 10 years young ‘spring breakers’ have dropped in Cancun by 90%. A decade ago, Cancun was the hip place to be for students looking to let off steam for spring break. Over 120,000 young spring breakers would converge on Cancun and party.

According to the Director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, Darío Flota Ocampo, the younger generation of students coming to Cancun for spring break has dropped to around 15,000 in 2018 and 2019. This year Ocampo said they are expecting even lower numbers due to travel restrictions and parents being weary of letting their children travel during the pandemic.

During the last two weeks of March is when the students usually have their spring break but this year is expected to be the quietest yet. The tourism council said very few travel agencies handle young spring break groups due to liability issues. Those that do are very small and are reporting very low reservations for 2021.

Cancun has changed over the last 10 years becoming a destination that attracts families, couples and those seeking some of the finer things in life at luxury all-inclusive hotels. It’s no longer the budget getaway that would bring students in droves looking for a cheap beach vacation to party.

Tulum on the other hand could see it’s fare share of younger adventure seekers as the destination is know being dubbed the ‘next Bali’. Its laid back beach town lifestyle combined with young travelers who love yoga, the environment and partying have put it on the map.

Instagrammers and those seeking an open-minded community that fully caters to vegans and yogis are falling in love with Tulum.

Occupancy Drops In Cancun

Overall occupancy in Cancun has fallen to 31% after new harsh travel restrictions by the Canadian government and testing requirements by the United States.

Spring break 2021 occupancy is expected to be down by 54% compared to 2019 and the total economic tourism spending to be down by almost 70%.
