Ever wonder what keeps flights to Cancun so cheap compared to other Mexican destinations?

Many factors contribute to low flight prices, including high numbers of routes, discount airlines, and a large airport capacity.

However, new data shows a lesser-known reason why flying to Cancun is so affordable in Mexico.

Cancun has a TUA, or Single Airport Tax, of 642.24 Pesos ($38.41 USD). This is one of the lowest TUA rates in all of Mexico.

A TUA is a fee on all international and domestic flights to fund airport infrastructure and services in Mexico.

TUA rates differ from airport to airport, and the cost of the TUA gets passed on to passengers.

For comparison, Mexico City has a TUA of 1101.92 Pesos ($65.90 USD), and Mazatlan has a TUA of 1270.20 Pesos ($75.96 USD).

In some cases, the TUA can account for 60% of the total ticket cost.

Many tourists in North America feel that flights to Cancun are affordable compared to other popular destinations.

This phenomenon results from a combination of factors that keep prices low.
Let’s look at some reasons flight costs remain so low in the Riviera Maya.

Tourism Competition

The tourism sector makes up a considerable portion of Cancun’s economy, and there is lots of competition to get a share of tourism earnings.

Tourism’s money incentivizes many airlines to offer a wide variety of flights to Cancun from all over North America.

With both budget carriers and normal ones in the market, competition to provide affordable transportation options for tourists is intense among airlines.

This robust competition compels airlines to lower fares to attract travelers, leading to a price-sensitive market that benefits consumers.

High Demand and Seasonal Variations

Cancun experiences significant seasonal variations in tourism demand.

The Riviera Maya has the highest tourism rates during peak vacation periods, such as winter and spring breaks.

Airlines adjust their pricing strategies based on these fluctuations in demand.

During low-demand periods, such as the fall, airlines often offer promotional deals and discounts, resulting in cheaper flights.

All-Inclusive Resort Packages

Many travelers visiting Cancun opt for all-inclusive resort packages, including accommodation, meals, and airport transfers.

Hotels and travel agencies collaborate with airlines to offer bundled deals that include flights to attract visitors to their resorts.

These packages can lead to lower overall travel costs than booking flights and accommodations separately.

Tourism Development Incentives

The Mexican government incentivizes tourism, especially in Cancun. Airlines can be the target of such incentives to increase air traffic to the region.

Reduced taxes, fees, and other financial benefits can lead to decreased operational costs for airlines, which may result in lower ticket prices for travelers.

Airport Infrastructure and Capacity

Cancun International Airport is a central hub for international travel in the Caribbean, serving as a gateway to Cancun and nearby destinations such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The airport’s well-established infrastructure and capacity to handle many passengers contribute to efficient operations.

This can lead to cost savings for airlines and passengers.

Geographic Location and Accessibility

Cancun’s geographic location makes it easily accessible from many major cities in North America.

New flights are constantly being added from cities across North America to Cancun.

Proximity to major U.S. cities reduces the time and fuel required for flights, potentially leading to lower airline operating costs.

These cost savings can translate into competitive ticket prices for travelers.

Dynamic Pricing Strategies

Airlines use dynamic pricing strategies that adjust fares based on various factors such as demand, supply, time until departure, and booking trends.

This flexibility allows airlines to optimize revenue while offering attractive deals to budget-conscious travelers.

As a result, travelers who plan ahead or are flexible with their travel dates may find more affordable options.

Loyalty Programs and Partnerships

Many airlines have loyalty programs and partnerships with hotels, rental car companies, and other travel-related businesses.

These alliances can offer travelers additional value, such as points, miles, or discounts, making flights to Cancun even more cost-effective.
