Had enough of winter and looking for a February vacation getaway to escape to a warm beach to put your toes in the sand with a drink in your hand?
According to a recent survey by Priceline, Cancun is a budget-priced destination for your February vacation beach getaway.
Low Roundtrip Flights
Based on the prices for roundtrip flights, the Mexican Caribbean travel hotspot of Cancun came in as the No. 4 most affordable international destination, based on the average cost of a roundtrip flight from across the U.S.
According to Priceline, the average price of a roundtrip flight to Cancun was about $430 at the time of the survey. That’s based on an average of all flights to Cancun.
Looking at the fares from Los Angeles at the time of the writing of this story showed the highest airfare in February at $357. However, in late February, fares as low as $224 round trip were available.
For Houston, the flights were even more budget-priced, with several round trips below $200. A fare of $303 was the highest seen at the time of writing this story, with some roundtrips as low as $171 available, even on weekends.
Low roundtrip fares in the $170s were also available from Chicago and Denver. Even New York showed flights to Cancun as low as $220 roundtrip in February.
Increased Competition
Recently, competition for passengers has increased significantly in the Mexican Caribbean, putting pressure on airfares for travelers flying to the region.
Not only is Merida rapidly growing in interest with travelers heading to the region, but also the upcoming opening of the new Tulum International Airport in March is creating low-fare opportunities for travelers.
That’s not even considering the number of airlines that announced additional flights to Cancun at the end of last year.
United Deals
For example, United Airlines significantly increased the number of flights from Denver, Chicago, and Los Angeles during the winter.
It also opted for the larger Boeing 777 jet from its Chicago, Houston, and Denver hubs to transport passengers to Cancun.
United increased the total number of seats available for Cancun visitors and made the average fare more affordable for travelers.
Great Time to Visit Cancun
February is a great time to visit the Mexican Caribbean beach resort destination of Cancun, with plenty of warm and sunny days.
According to Weather Trends, Cancun features an average high of 80 degrees in the month of February with lows around 73. Average rainfall is about an inch and a half during the entire month.
For travelers concerned about the extremes, the record high in Cancun for the month of February is only 87 degrees, with a record low of 55 degrees.
That sounds a lot better than most of the winter weather predicted for next month in the United States.
By the way, don’t forget you have an extra day next month to enjoy yourself in Cancun as it is Leap Year!
Tips For Travelers
Now is the time to look for travel deals for a vacation getaway to Cancun. While last-minute travel is generally not advised due to the high costs, this is an opportunity to enjoy an escape from the winter weather to the sun, sand, and surf of the Mexican Caribbean.
Before booking a flight, which is generally hard to cancel outside of the 24-hour window refund period required by the United States Department of Transportation, travelers may want to consider looking at resorts and hotels first.
Resorts and hotels can generally be canceled with advance notice. Travelers should check and ensure that accommodations are available that meet their budget requirements before moving on to booking flights.
