Cancun hotels and businesses have already won a number of awards this year, but the city itself has now been nominated for three prestigious awards in the 2022 World Travel Awards. Anyone can vote for their favorite destination in a number of categories but the voting will be ending soon, closing on October 20th. Municipal President of Benito Juárez, Ana Patricia Peralta, compared the awards to the popular “Oscars” of the tourism industry and urged people to vote before the deadline.
Over the last 26 years, Cancun has won a total of 45 awards in the World Travel Awards, according to the General Directorate of Municipal Tourism. Just in this last year, the city was nominated for seven awards in the regional categories of “Mexico” and “Mexico and Central America.” Cancun ultimately won two out of the seven of those awards earlier in the year and took home a number of awards in other categories as well.
In the earlier decided awards, Cancun won the award for Mexico and Central America’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2022. The city also won the award for Mexico’s Leading Destination 2022, one of the most prestigious of all the regional awards given out so far. In addition to those awards, a number of hotels and businesses also made it to the winner’s list.
Hyatt Ziva won awards for being Mexico’s Leading Beach Resort, and Mexico’s Leading Resort, The Grand at Moon Palace was named Mexico’s Leading Family Resort, and The Ritz-Carlton won the award for Mexico’s Leading Hotel. Grand Residences Riviera Cancun topped the list for Mexico’s Leading Hotel Residences. And last but certainly not least, the One&Only Palmilla took home two awards this year, for Mexico & Central America’s Most Romantic Resort and Mexico’s Leading Luxury Resort.
Cancun is currently recognized as one of the most visited cities in the world, and most of those visitors are travelers from abroad. This is according to tourism numbers that show that millions of tourists have vacationed in the hugely popular Mexican Caribbean vacation destination already this year. It has recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic better than most tourist destinations and continues to welcome hundreds of visitors every week.
While September was a slow month for tourism in Cancun, the industry is gearing up for a busy winter season. So far more than 22 million visitors have arrived to vacation in the Mexican Caribbean through Cancun International Airport and projections predict that number could reach as many as 26 million by the end of the year. In addition, more than 2 million tourists have visited by way of cruise ship already this year and more are expected throughout the winter.
Now, with the World Travel Awards voting for the “World’s Leading” category coming to an end soon, it remains to be seen if Cancun can take home even more awards this year. These awards truly determine the best of the best, which Cancun has proven to be time and time again. The city is nominated for:

● World’s Leading City Destination 2022
● World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2022
There are many reasons for Cancun consistently being considered one of the top vacation destinations in the world, most of all the diversity in all the things there is to do in the city. There is history and nature, and beaches, great dining, and luxurious all-inclusive resorts, adventure, and exciting nightlife. Few destinations in the world have so much to offer and the proof is in the pudding, and pretty soon we’ll see if Cancun can prove once again just how special it is.
