The Maya Train was designed to be the ultimate, hassle-free way to explore the Yucatan Peninsula, promising a smooth and comfortable ride between major hubs like Mérida and Cancun. But for dozens of travelers this past Wednesday, that promise completely fell apart. What was supposed to be a relaxing, air-conditioned journey turned into a grueling five-hour nightmare that left passengers stranded, sweating, and completely in the dark.

According to passenger accounts, the problems started with the train that departed Mérida at three in the afternoon, scheduled to arrive in Cancun right around dinner time. Everything seemed to be going perfectly fine until the train was just about ten kilometers away from the Cancun station. Without any warning, the train completely lost power and came to a dead stop on the tracks near Leona Vicario. Losing power on a train is frustrating enough, but in the brutal summer heat of the Mexican Caribbean, losing the air conditioning turns a train car into an absolute oven within minutes.

The Botched Rescue Attempt That Made Things Worse
When a train breaks down just a few miles from the terminal, you would naturally expect a quick evacuation or a fast transfer to another train. Unfortunately, the decisions made by the operators on the ground ended up making a bad situation significantly worse. A second train had left Mérida about an hour and twenty minutes after the first one and was quickly approaching the same area.
Instead of pulling up alongside the broken-down train and allowing the sweltering passengers to transfer over and finish their journey to Cancun, a completely different call was made. The operators ordered the second train to attempt a towing maneuver. The plan was to hook up to the dead train and pull the entire massive load the rest of the way. The maneuver completely failed. The immense strain ended up causing mechanical issues for the second train as well, leaving both trains and all of their passengers completely stranded on the tracks.

Darkness And Zero Communication
As the sun went down, the situation inside the train cars grew incredibly tense. Because the power was completely cut, passengers were left sitting in total darkness. The air conditioning remained off, and because modern train windows do not open, there was absolutely zero ventilation or fresh air circulating through the packed cabins.
To make matters worse, travelers reported that the staff on board completely failed to communicate what was happening. Passengers were left completely in the dark, both literally and figuratively. Videos posted to social media showed frustrated travelers fanning themselves, trying to comfort crying children, and demanding answers from the crew. People were exhausted, dehydrated, and furious that there was no backup plan in place for a breakdown of this magnitude.

Security Forces Arrive But Relief Is Blocked
As the hours dragged on, emergency services were finally called to the scene. Members of the National Guard and local security personnel arrived to assess the situation. Local firefighters and civil protection units also rushed to the tracks, ready to provide water, medical assistance, and help evacuate the stranded travelers from the sweltering train cars.
However, in a move that has left many people completely baffled, the train authorities reportedly denied the firefighters and rescue workers access to the train. Instead of allowing the emergency crews to assist the distressed passengers, they were forced to wait while the railway operators tried to figure out a mechanical solution. It was a chaotic scene that left families waiting for hours for relief that was sitting just outside their windows.

What Travelers Need To Know Right Now
Eventually, the passengers were finally transported to the Cancun terminal, arriving at three in the morning—a staggering six hours behind schedule. While no serious injuries were reported, the intense frustration and exhaustion took a massive toll on everyone involved.
If you are planning to ride the Maya Train this summer, this incident is a serious reminder that you need to be prepared for the unexpected. While the train is a fantastic concept and offers great views, they are clearly still working out some major operational issues. Whenever you board, always bring a fully charged battery pack for your phone, pack extra snacks, and carry way more drinking water than you think you will need. If the air conditioning goes out again, having cold water on hand will be an absolute lifesaver while you wait for things to get moving again.
