Cancun Tourism Is So Strong That Not Even Sargassum Can Stop It, New Report Shows

Why Monitoring Matters

Sargassum is a naturally occurring brown macroalgae that drifts from the Sargasso Sea into the Caribbean, sometimes accumulating in thick mats onshore.

While a moderate patch won’t harm swimmers, it can affect water clarity, beach access, and aesthetics.

Instead of stressing over “will it or won’t it” ruin your beach photos, simply check the live feeds before heading out—no guesswork needed! Monitoring also gives local authorities a head start on cleanup, so you can still soak up the sun.

Check These Live Webcams

With recent photos circulating online misleading travelers on the sargassum situation, it’s more important than ever to have the most up-to-date information possible.

Luckily, you can preview sargassum buildup (or clear blue water!) at dozens of prime spots in Quintana Roo via Webcams de México here. Here are a few must-watch feeds:

  • Cancún Iberostar: View the beachfront panorama where the Iberostar hotels line the shore—ideal for spotting any incoming mats before you book that cabana.
  • Punta Cancún Hyatt Ziva: Panoramic feed of Punta Cancún lets you gauge currents and incoming sargassum in real time.
  • Cancún Live Aqua: High-definition shots from the Live Aqua resort reveal early-morning seaweed lines rolling in.
  • Cancún Krystal Hotel & Resort: Keep an eye on Playa Chac Mool from the Krystal’s beachfront cam to see if cleanup crews are ahead of the tide.

For the full list of 23 coastal cameras across Quintana Roo, scroll down to the Quintana Roo section on Webcams de México.

Here’s an example from our list above:

Track with Interactive Maps

Beyond webcams, use the Riviera Maya Sargassum Forecast map to anticipate seaweed landings up to seven days out.

This high-resolution map combines satellite detection (“AFAI”), HYCOM ocean-current models, and NCEP wind forecasts to plot probable sargassum trajectories around Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, and Holbox.

Updated super often, it’s your best tool for tactical planning—just bookmark the page and check before each beach excursion.

The #1 Mistake Travelers Make When Booking a Cancun Resort

How Authorities Are Fighting Back

Quintana Roo’s government and local partners have launched a multi-pronged battle plan to keep beaches pristine — so you won’t have to cancel your day in the sand. Governor Mara Lezama rolled out a strategy in April 2025 that includes:

  • Monitoring & Early Warning: The Mexican Navy tracks offshore blooms to forecast arrivals.
  • Containment Barriers: 9,500 meters of booms offshore redirect sargassum toward collection zones.
  • Offshore Harvesters: 11 specialized vessels plus 22 smaller boats skim seaweed before landfall.
  • On-Beach Cleanup: Combined state, municipal, hotel, and Navy crews handle inevitable arrivals.
  • Responsible Disposal: Collected biomass is processed to minimize environmental impact.
  • Public Awareness: Visitors and residents are encouraged to report heavy mats and support cleanup efforts.

Since 2021, 383 million pesos (≈ 19.17 million USD) have been allocated for these efforts, with daily operations now mobilizing around 600 workers—Zofemat staff, municipal crews, naval personnel, and hotel teams—using rakes, tractors, sweepers, and wheelbarrows to clear sargassum before crowds arrive/

Don’t Cancel Your Trip—Explore Sargassum-Free Gems

If you spot a heavy patch at your hotel beach, consider hopping to alternative shores.

Isla Mujeres often dodges the worst blooms thanks to its unique currents and dedicated Zofemat teams—making North Beach a reliable refuge for clear sand and calm water.

Holbox, about 60 km north of Cancún, stays largely sargassum-free thanks to natural barriers of dunes and mangroves, plus an active local cleanup campaign—perfect for hammock-in-the-water selfies without seaweed in the frame.

I’ve been and just returned- it’s worse than those pics. I’ve never seen it so bad! And in places normally protected from severe sargassum.

It’s not a piece or two- it’s dense and very dark. Feels awful , and that’s when it’s mild. This is a carpet of stuff with little crabs and sea creatures that are harmless, but it can cause rashes on some.

We saw no one anywhere near it, not even locals. It will probably be there most days, and it’s not always cleared up properly
