We at The Cancun Sun love celebrating the magic of our Hotel Zone—those calm turquoise beaches on the “7,” late-night tacos, sunrise walks, and jungle-fringed lagoon views.
But today we’re also passing along an important reminder from local authorities: give wildlife space, especially around the Nichupté Lagoon.
The alert follows an incident Friday afternoon in which a 31-year-old American traveler was bitten by a crocodile near Km 11, across from the Hyatt Ziva area. He received prompt first aid from Tourist Police and paramedics and was transported to a private hospital in stable condition. According to his statement, he had approached the animal to snap a photo when it lunged.

Why Nichupté Is Croc Country
The Nichupté system—mangroves, channels, and brackish lagoons that parallel the Hotel Zone—is a protected area and a natural crocodile habitat. It’s home to species that are federally protected in Mexico, and preserving these ecosystems is part of what keeps Cancun so spectacular for the long term.
Translation: it’s completely normal to see crocodiles here, especially along lagoon edges, docks, and mangrove cuts.
In recent months, local outlets have reported dozens of sightings across the city, underscoring a simple truth: as the city grows and more people explore the lagoon, interactions can increase—particularly when visitors get too close for photos or attempt to feed wildlife.

Smart Safety Habits Around the Lagoon
The most important rule is also the easiest: admire crocs from a distance. Conservation specialists who work on human–crocodile coexistence in Quintana Roo emphasize clear do’s and don’ts for tourists, businesses, and residents—keep off the water’s edge, never feed or provoke, and keep cameras (and fingers!) well away. If you see a crocodile, back away calmly and alert staff or authorities.
A few more quick tips to stay safe and stress-free:
- Stick to signed paths and boardwalks along the lagoon and marinas. If you spot a warning sign, take it seriously. We’ve highlighted those croc warning signs before in our coverage of the Nichupté bridge project that will speed up shuttles to and from the Hotel Zone.
- Avoid the water’s edge at dusk and after dark. That’s peak time for wildlife movement.
- Book regulated tours. If you want to experience the mangroves safely, go with licensed operators who know the routes and keep a respectful distance (we’ve rounded up some great Nichupté experiences for readers before).
- Follow lifeguards and flags on the beach. A white flag can indicate dangerous marine life has been spotted—useful context even if you’re not at the lagoon.

Putting The Incident In Context
While crocodile encounters make headlines (and for good reason), the vast majority of Cancun vacations go off without a hitch. Problems usually happen when someone ignores posted signs or leans in for that “epic” selfie. Friday’s case is a good reminder that the lagoon is a living, protected ecosystem—treat it like a wildlife park, not a petting zoo.

Bottom Line For Travelers
Cancun is built on the edge of wild beauty—Caribbean on one side, mangroves on the other—and that’s part of the magic. Enjoy it responsibly: keep a safe buffer from the lagoon’s edge, obey posted warnings, book licensed tours for any mangrove adventures, and leave wildlife undisturbed.
After Friday’s incident, authorities reiterated the same commonsense message we share often: respect the habitat, and it will reward you with the views and experiences you came for—minus the close-ups.
Stay safe and keep those lagoon views strictly panorama-mode—not selfie-mode.
