Cancun Wait Times At Immigration Reduced To 20 Minutes But What About Bags?

Share The Article

For years, it was the one dreaded part of arriving in paradise: the seemingly endless, snaking line at the immigration hall in the Cancun International Airport. After a long flight, every traveler just wants to start their vacation, but first, they had to face a lengthy, unpredictable wait. Now, according to a recent announcement from state officials, that frustrating delay is officially a thing of the past.

Cancun Wait Times At Immigration Reduced To 20 Minutes But What About Bags

In a major win for travelers, Governor Mara Lezama has confirmed that a series of targeted improvements has successfully reduced the average wait time at immigration checkpoints to less than 20 minutes. This is a huge quality-of-life upgrade for the millions of visitors who fly into the region, and fantastic news that we at The Cancun Sun are thrilled to share, as it makes the arrival process smoother and faster than ever.

The New Bottleneck: The Baggage Claim Blues

So, if immigration is so fast, where’s the delay? As many recent visitors flying into Cancun this summer have pointed out, the real waiting game now begins at the baggage carousel. The airport has successfully solved one problem, only to reveal another bottleneck further down the line.

While the “90-minute delay” warnings from airlines seem to be a worst-case scenario, travelers on busy days report that waiting 30 to 50 minutes for checked bags to arrive is now very common, especially if multiple large flights land at the same time.

“The e-Gates were a dream,” one recent traveler commented on a TripAdvisor forum. “But then we stood at the baggage carousel for a solid 45 minutes. It’s definitely the new bottleneck.”

What This Means For Your Arrival

A faster arrival process is still a huge win, but savvy travelers need to adjust their expectations. The time you save at immigration is now simply being shifted to baggage claim. The best advice is to be prepared for this wait. Use the time to connect to the newly available free Wi-Fi in the arrivals hall, use the restroom, and mentally prepare your “Shark Tank” escape plan.

But for those who want to truly optimize their arrival, there is one pro-level move that changes the game entirely.

The Ultimate Pro Move: The Carry-On Only Arrival

For travelers who want the absolute fastest and most seamless arrival experience possible, the new answer is simple: go carry-on only.

While everyone else who breezed through immigration is just beginning their long, 45-minute vigil at the carousel, the carry-on traveler is already walking through customs. The advantage is massive. You completely bypass the single biggest delay at the airport, putting you ahead of the crowds for customs, the Shark Tank, and the transportation scrum outside.

Packing for a week-long tropical vacation in just a carry-on can be a challenge, but the reward is immense: gaining back nearly an hour of your precious vacation time. The new reality of Cancun arrivals is that the final boss is no longer the immigration line—it’s the baggage carousel. And the only way to truly beat it is to not play the game at all.

The baggage wait is not new. At least for the past 5 years if traveling there. It takes about an hour to get your bags. And the person that says you can beat the wait by doing just a carry on, real genius there.

@Cynthia, I agree. If one is willing to pay for laundry services at the resort, go for it; or is willing to pay out the nose for sun screen, go for it. Can't bring large size sun screens in check on until the gov'ts of both countries stop the 3 oz. rule.
