Cancun Road Safety – Information For Tourists

News of car crashes in Cancun, and particularly the Cancun Hotel Zone is not a common occurrence. With hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of international tourists arriving at Cancun International Airport around the clock, tourists in the region typically have a very safe vacation in the region.

However, there has been an increasing number of reports this year of public transportation accidents in the Cancun region. According to the latest data, it is Cancun taxis that are involved in around 80% of said accidents, which have resulted in hundreds of injuries so far this year, as we reported in the Cancun Sun back in September.

In the report, we noted that 289 public transport-related accidents were recorded over a four-month period this year, and a total of 224 of them were linked to taxis. These numbers were gathered from Municipal Secretary for Public Security and Transit.

The biggest tourist-related vehicle accident this year happened in February when three foreign nationals and eight Mexican nationals were killed in a bus crash that was carrying tourists from Cancun to the Yucatan capital of Merida. The bus, which was an ADO coach bus, overturned after colliding with a dump truck along the highway.
