Digital Nomad Community Booming in the Mexican Caribbean

Last Updated

As the pandemic-era workforce shifts to remote work practices, the Quintana Roo Tourism Council has reported an increase in digital nomads relocating to the Mexican Caribbean.

Mexico’s relaxed entry requirements, relatively lenient restrictions, and attractive climate already make it an ideal location for travelers. More recently, enhanced office accommodations and growing remote-work communities in the region are attracting digital nomads from all around the world.

In this regard, the Director of Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, Darío Flota, said:

“Thanks to the range of services offered by the Mexican Caribbean for this type of traveler, this niche has grown in the region. On the islands, especially Cozumel, there has been an increase in the average stay and the number of visitors with extended stays continues to grow. The infinity of accommodation options that exist gives them the possibility of working on projects or practicing certain activities that do not require a specific physical space.”

Digital Nomad Communities in the Mexican Caribbean

Playa del Carmen and Tulum are two prime locations recognized for their digital nomad communities, with hotels offering attractive packages and office accommodations to remote workers. The two areas have seen significant growth in shared workspaces and nest co-working due to the different types of packages that adapt to the needs of professionals.

Cozumel, a quaint island located adjacent to Playa del Carmen, reported an increase in the length of average stays as they offer attractive properties like the Villas El Encanto or Hotel B Cozumel, with excellent amenities for remote workers in close proximity to the city center.

All three, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel, offer luxury hotels, boutique hotels, and hostels, designed specifically for digital nomads. The accommodations provide the necessities of traditional office space while adding luxuries like beach views and natural attractions.

Among the properties that really stand out for offering packages aimed at digital nomads is Selina and Las Nubes de Holbox, which host a perfect location to enjoy and work at the same time, as well as luxury hotels such as JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa, the Ritz-Carlton, Cancun or Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa, with attractive benefits.

Mexico is certified with the Safe Travels seal from the World Travel and Tourism Council, as well as the Certification in Health Protection and Prevention in Tourist Facilities – which serves as a key motivator for travelers to visit and reside in the country.

The Mexican Caribbean is especially dedicated to the health and safety of its visitors considering the region is highly dependant on the tourism sector.
