Cancún, Mexico – If you’re in Cancun or anywhere along the Quintana Roo coast today, brace yourself for some challenging weather thanks to a system meteorologists call a “surada.” Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) is warning that this pattern is bringing a mix of strong southerly winds, potentially dangerous conditions along the beaches, and some pretty intense heat. Both locals and tourists really need to be careful, especially near the water.

This “surada” basically means strong, warm winds blowing in from the south or southeast across the Yucatan Peninsula. For Quintana Roo today (Sunday), expect steady winds around 20-30 kph (12-19 mph). The bigger issue, though, will be the gusts – they could really whip up, reaching speeds between 50 and 70 kph (31-43 mph). That’s strong enough to make walking uncomfortable, kick up sand and dust, and potentially send things like patio umbrellas or unsecured signs flying.
Probably the most noticeable effect will be along the coastline. The SMN is forecasting waves building up to 1 to 3 meters (about 3 to 10 feet). That means rough surf and strong currents, making swimming pretty risky, even if you’re a strong swimmer. Anyone thinking of taking out a small boat should seriously reconsider or at least check the latest warnings – navigating those choppy, windy seas can be treacherous. You’ll definitely see these bigger waves hitting the Hotel Zone beaches and other popular spots down the Riviera Maya, possibly causing some erosion and leading lifeguards to restrict swimming areas. Keep a close eye on those beach flags and listen to what the lifeguards say.

On top of the wind, the heat isn’t letting up. While these “surada” winds can sometimes be dry, temperatures are expected to stay high. The SMN predicts parts of the Yucatan Peninsula, including areas in Quintana Roo, could hit 35 to 40 degrees Celsius (95-104°F) in the afternoon. Cancun itself might be slightly cooler, but still very warm, topping out around 30°C (86°F) and only dropping to about 26°C (79°F) overnight. With the humidity, it’s going to feel sticky and draining. Seriously, drink tons of water, try to stay in the shade during the hottest parts of the day, wear light clothes, and take it easy on strenuous activities.

The good news? Widespread rain isn’t really in the forecast. Skies should be mostly sunny, maybe with some clouds rolling in later. There’s a small chance of a very light, isolated shower here or there (less than 5mm), but it won’t be enough to cool things down or calm the winds much.
So, what does this mean for your plans today? Beach time might be limited because of the rough surf, and boat tours could easily be cancelled or delayed. Exploring ruins or wandering through town is still possible, but you absolutely need to plan around the heat and stay hydrated. If you live here, make sure anything loose in your yard or balcony is tied down or brought inside before those strong gusts hit.

The main takeaway is to be aware and be cautious today. Stay updated with official weather info, be extra careful near the ocean, and take steps to avoid overheating. Stay safe out there!
