Holbox Tourists Urged To Follow This New Rule To Protect Beaches

Holbox is a beautiful tropical island that is less than 2.5 hours from Cancun, including the drive to Chiquila and the ferry ride to the island.   

It’s known for its stunning white sand beaches that line its Gulf of Mexico coast, and officials are doing what they can to keep those beaches beautiful.   

This is why Holbox tourists are being urged to follow a new rule to protect the area’s beaches. 

The New Rule For Tourists Visiting Holbox Beaches 

The beaches of Holbox are part of a protected natural area that is being disrupted by tourists bringing golf carts and bikes onto the sand and near the water.   

For this reason, officials are asking visitors to refrain from doing so.   

Areas that are restricted from golf carts and bikes are indicated by signs present, warning that they are not allowed on the beaches.

How The New Rule Benefits The Beaches 

According to officials, bikes and golf carts contribute to polluting the beaches and the water.   

Golf carts can leak gasoline and oil, and bicycles produce grease that can be left behind.   

Additionally, by taking either on the beaches, the vegetation that is an important part of the overall ecosystem is being disturbed.   

Following this new rule will keep this from happening.

How Officials Are Enforcing The New Rule 

As of right now, officials are mainly focusing on the service providers that rent bikes and golf carts to tourists.  

Officials ask these service providers to inform tourists of this rule.   

When tourists don’t obey the rule, it’s these service providers that suffer because they are forced to go pick up their rental when tourists get caught breaking the rule and have it confiscated.

What The New Rule Means For Holbox Tourists 

Currently, there are no fines or other punishments for tourists who break the rule.   

They may have the bicycle or golf cart confiscated, but there are no legal implications.   

Tour providers and locals are urging officials to do more, including fining rule breakers that take golf carts and bikes into these areas.

Another Way Tourists Can Help Holbox Preserve Its Beaches 

Recently, officials made another request of tourists that will help preserve the island’s beautiful beaches.   

This time, the request involves the sargassum that is known to wash up on the beaches in the region.   

Officials are asking tourists to ignore the sargassum and refrain from disturbing it.   

Sargassum is a seaweed that arrives in minimal amounts in Holbox, and what little there is, officials say can help preserve the beaches.

What To Do When Visiting Holbox Beaches 

In addition to the usual tours and water activities you’ll find on most Mexican beaches, there are some unique things to enjoy on the beaches in Holbox.   

There are two spots where you can swing your worries away in hammocks situated above the turquoise water.   

At night at Punta Cocos, you can view the beach in all of its bioluminescent glory, and a visit to Punta Mosquito during certain times of the year will allow you to see a colony of flamingos.   

Of course, you can always just relax the day away on Holbox’s beaches, too.
