How Much Tourists Can Expect To Pay For Transportation At New Tulum Airport

The new Tulum Airport has been open for domestic flights since December 1, 2023.

Now, it’s only weeks away before the state-of-the-art airport will start welcoming international flights, specifically flights from the U.S.

As hundreds of Americans prepare for those inaugural flights, it’s a good time to review the different transportation options available and how much tourists can expect to pay for transportation at the new Tulum Airport.

Transportation From Tulum Airport

Several different transportation options can be booked upon arriving at Tulum Airport.

As of right now online bookings are not available, but will be in the future.

The airport website does provide a list of all of the options available, though, which includes the ADO bus, private transportation, and rental cars.

Location Of The Airport

Tulum Airport, which is also referred to as Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, isn’t actually in Tulum at all but rather in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

This is approximately 27 miles from the Hotel Zone in Tulum.

If you’re staying in that area of Tulum, it’s about a 45-minute trip from the airport to your hotel.

Cost To Get To The Town Of Tulum

Due to the length of the trip and other factors, airport transfers from Tulum Airport are pretty pricey.

The least expensive option is the ADO bus, which costs just over $10 to get to Tulum, but currently, the bus only departs three times a day.

Taking a private car to Tulum from the airport will cost about $107, and a private SUV will run around $263!

Traveling Beyond Tulum

As you can probably imagine, traveling beyond Tulum after landing at Tulum Airport will cost quite a bit more.

To get to Playa del Carmen, which is an hour and a half from Tulum, the one-way rates for a car and SUV are $216 and $499, respectively.

Even to get to Akumal, which is only an hour away, those rates are $117 and $291.

Reason Behind The Higher Rates Than Cancun

Airport transfers in Cancun aren’t necessarily cheap either, but much less than in Tulum.

The reason for this is that transfer providers in Tulum are charged much more to operate at the new airport, so much so that some have even stopped offering services.

Their rate is somewhere in the range of 805 to 933 pesos, or around $53, which they have to pay every time they pick up or drop off at the airport.

At Cancun Airport, transportation providers are only charged a couple of dollars for each trip.

Renting A Car At Tulum Airport

Because the rates for transportation from Tulum Airport are so high, it might be better, and cheaper, to rent a car.

For the smallest available vehicles, rates start at around $27 a day.

At that rate, renting a car for a four-day trip will cost not much more than a one-way trip from the airport to your hotel in a private car.

It makes even more sense to rent a car if you plan to travel further beyond Tulum.

When The First U.S. Flights Will Land In Tulum

Several U.S. airlines will be offering flights to Tulum from a number of American cities.

Both Delta and American Airlines are expected to launch their first U.S. to Tulum flights on March 28th.

Those flights will be taking off from Dallas-Fort Worth, Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale.

If you’ll be on one of those flights or one landing in Tulum in the near future, now is a good time to start thinking about what you want to do about transportation.
