Mexican Caribbean Easier To Reach Than Ever As It Is Officially Home To 4 Airports

Last Updated

With the introduction of the Tulum International Airport, the Mexican Caribbean is gearing up to become more connected than ever as it experiences an earth-shatteringly good year in the tourism sector.

Opened on December 1st, “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” joined a list of three other airports in the region, meaning even more flight routes and passenger seats for hungry tourists searching for the perfect vacation.

Tulum International Airport Confirmed Flights

There are already a number of airlines and confirmed flights announced for the inauguration of the airport, with airlines such as Viva Aerobus and Aeromexico offering the first plane tickets from December, with domestic flights only.

All eyes are on March 2024, however, when the highly anticipated airlines arriving from the United States come into effect, such as United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta from highly popular U.S cities such as San Francisco, Miami, Dallas, and Chicago, but to name a few.

The airport is situated a mere 20 kilometers from the center of Tulum, making it extremely accessible for all passengers who no longer have to make the two-hour journey to the upcoming, trendy destination by flying into Cancun International Airport first.

Tulum is in a prime location that gives you easy access to other popular hotspots such as Playa Del Carmen, the magical town of Valladolid, and the most popular archeological site in all of Mexico, Chichén Itzá.

The Most Popular Airport In The Mexican Caribbean

Tulum’s billion-dollar investment in its new airport comes just in time as Cancun International has become inundated with passengers to the point of maximum capacity in recent years, with 500 flights a day during summer and winter peak times.

Cancun is the tenth busiest airport in the world, connecting more than 40 cities in the United States, as well as 20 cities in Europe.

Undoubtedly the most popular destination in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun offers luxury accommodations, incredible tourist attractions, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the region.

Its connectivity is its main draw, being so convenient for Americans as a vacation destination, allowing them to skip out on airport layovers and jet lag and be closer than ever to the infamous hotel zone and the heart of the city.

The airport also acts as an important base for much of the Mexican Caribbean to destinations such as Cozumel, Xcaret parks, Isla Mujeres, and many more.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the new Tulum airport affects Cancun; perhaps it is the respite that it needs to reduce the overcrowding and busyness.

Cozumel International Airport

Now an ever-growing popular destination and newly labeled ‘magical town’, Cozumel has its own international airport located on the Caribbean coast, connecting the island to various Mexican cities and international destinations.

The island itself is known for its white sands and turquoise-blue waters, as well as being rich in Mayan culture and even host to part of the Mesoamerican Reef, a snorkeler’s paradise.

Cozumel is the perfect choice for any traveler looking to experience the allure and charm of an authentic Mexican island, with quaint shops and unique places to eat.

The airport offers 13 airlines that connect passengers to various destinations both within Mexico as well as to cities in the United States and Canada, acting as the perfect gateway for tourists to explore this hidden gem of an island.

Chetumal International Airport

Though much smaller in size, Chetumal Airport still connects passengers from Mexico City.

Only open between the hours of 7 am to 7 pm, the airport has a total of five airlines that run operations, however with Chetumal’s current surge in popularity, there may be more flights on the cards in the near future.

Known for its diverse cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and proximity to some popular tourist attractions, Chetumal is a gateway to a world of natural beauty and somewhere you can fly right into, thanks to having its own airport!
