Places like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Los Cabos have long been popular vacation destinations, but the popularity of Cancun has grown exponentially over the last year, and now nearly 50 percent of foreign tourists who visit Mexico go to Cancun. Beautiful beaches, luxury all-inclusive resorts, ancient Mayan ruins, great restaurants, and exciting events and activities are just a few of the reasons so many people visit the city. Add to that the fact that Cancun continued to welcome visitors during the pandemic, and the city’s popularity skyrocketed in the last 12-18 months.
According to a recent report from the Secretary of Tourism, Cancun was the destination for 46.9 percent of all tourists who visited Mexico between January and July of this year. During that time almost 6 million people passed through the Cancun International Airport. This number represents a 72 percent increase compared to the same timeframe in 2021.
It’s no wonder with these kinds of numbers that hotels in Cancun’s Hotel Zone stayed continuously booked to near capacity throughout the first half of the year. There are more than 100 hotels in this area of Cancun alone, ranging from five-star all-inclusive resorts to smaller chain hotels. A total of 11 new hotels have been added over the last two years and four more will open their doors by the end of the year.
Even with so many options, it can be difficult to find a room during the busiest seasons in Cancun. This is typically during the early spring months when a lot of Americans and Canadians are trying to escape the cold, and the summer months, when kids and teachers are on summer break. For those wanting to visit Cancun during these times, it is important to book early.
It may be difficult to book early for those that are unsure as to when they can get time off but travel insurance can protect your trip and give you peace of mind. The most popular type of insurance covers a trip if it’s canceled or interrupted and also covers things like lost baggage. This type of plan can cost as little as 5 percent of the price of the vacation package, meaning just $250 may cover the cost of a $5,000 vacation.
Travelers can buy travel insurance on their own or have it added to their vacation package. Medical travel insurance is also available just in case a traveler is unfortunate enough to become ill while on vacation. This is particularly useful when traveling to a foreign country, as your regular insurance won’t cover the cost of medical treatment received overseas.
Over the next six months, Cancun is expected to continue to stay pretty busy. The Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo highlighted in a recent report that more than 9 million seats are already booked for flights to the Mexican Caribbean for those months. This is a 38 percent increase compared to the same months three years ago.
As the Cancun government continues to focus on some of the issues the city is dealing with, like crime and sargassum, it will become an even more popular vacation destination. From celebrities to families, Cancun has something to offer for everyone and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a time to visit when the city isn’t packed with tourists. This is why now is the time to go because it will only be more popular in the future.
