One of the biggest things travelers to Cancun have issues with when they come to the beach resort destination is traffic, especially when it comes to airport traffic.
A big step towards solving that problem is finally being tackled as the Cancun Cloverleaf highway project officially passes the halfway mark of completion.
The Cancun Cloverleaf
Nearly a year into construction of the Cancun Cloverleaf, the massive project has officially hit the halfway point as eager tourists await the opening of the new roadway.
When it is complete, it is designed to be a six-lane cloverleaf intersection with three lanes in each direction. It is currently only four lanes.
The Cancun Cloverleaf is designed to provide visitors to the beach resort destination with easier access between the Cancun International Airport and the Cancun main hotel zone.
It will also connect Huayacán and Chac Mool Avenues to the Cancun International Airport and the hotel zone, providing tourists with even more access to key roads in the area.
The cloverleaf project has been concurrently completed along with the remodeling of Cancun’s principal roadway artery, Colosio Boulevard.
The work is being designed to alleviate much of the traffic that is currently congesting the major roadways around Cancun due to the recent increase in the popularity of Cancun as a resort vacation destination.

It is also being built to assist visitors with easy direct access to the Maya Train coming soon to Cancun International Airport.
Support From The Quintana Roo Governor
Governor Mara Lezama recently sent out a number of messages about the progress of the new Cancun Cloverleaf, along with its expected completion date in October, just in time for the busy holiday travel season in Cancun.

She specifically mentioned not only the economic impact and jobs created by the road construction project but also the important impact it will have on visitors and tourism overall in Cancun.
“A necessary, modern and high-quality project which generates more jobs and will improve mobility and shorten travel times for our people and visitors,” remarked Governor Lezama on social media.
Traffic Issues in Cancun
Director of the Center for Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation for Quintana Roo Guido Mendiburu Solis has had this project in the planning stages for some time.
While the project is a bit slow to develop, it will make a huge difference for visitors to Cancun.
Traffic has become more of an issue lately as the roads between the airport and the hotel zone have especially been clogged with the increase in tourist traffic.
The Cancun International Airport is one of the busiest three airports in the entire country due to strong visitor interest in the beach resort destination.
While Mendiburu Solis is working to complete the Cancun Cloverleaf project as quickly as possible, it actually has been adding to some of the traffic woes for visitors over the past year.
However, he recently confirmed that the project should be completed and ready for its first real big test for Cancun tourists in the next couple of months.
What it Means For Visitors
While a headache right now due to construction-related traffic and road detours, eventually, the new Cancun Cloverleaf will shorten the amount of time needed to travel between the hotel zone and the Cancun International Airport.
This will make it easier for visitors to get to and from the airport faster, with hopefully fewer delays due to road travel.
The direct access to the Maya Train will also provide visitors to the Cancun area with more options of places to visit with easy access.
It will offer an alternative to the traditional ride-share and taxi services that currently dominate visitor transportation from the airport.
