If you thought the “holiday rush” was just a phrase travel agents used to scare you into booking early, let this be your wake-up call: Cancun and the Riviera Maya didn’t just start 2026 busy; it started by smashing every record in the book.
We are talking about historic flight numbers that have never been seen before, cruise ports that are absolutely overflowing, and a new city-wide initiative that is making it easier than ever for everyone to hit the sand.

Here at The Cancun Sun, we have been tracking the numbers, and the verdict is in: the “quiet” season is officially extinct. If you are planning a trip this winter, you are joining millions of others who had the exact same idea.
From the new “Ruta Mar” free busses to the 771 flights that landed in a single day, here is how Cancun is launching the new year.
The “Best Year Yet”: Flight Records Shattered
While the busses are moving people on the ground, the sky is where the real records were broken. Governor Mara Lezama has officially proclaimed that 2025 was the best year in the state’s history for connectivity, and 2026 is picking up right where it left off.
The numbers are staggering.

- December 27, 2025: A new all-time record was set with 771 air operations in a single day across the state’s airports.
- December 20, 2025: Just a week prior, the record was 766 operations, which we covered when officials first announced the holiday surge.
To put that in perspective, a “busy” day used to be 600 flights. We are now consistently pushing nearly 800. This influx confirms that the new Tulum Airport (TQO) isn’t cannibalizing Cancun’s traffic—it’s just adding more fuel to the fire. There are more flight options than ever to reach our paradise!
Cruise Control: 7.4 Million Passengers
It’s not just the airports. The floating resorts are pulling their weight, too. The Governor announced that Quintana Roo welcomed over 7.4 million cruise passengers in 2025, a 3.6% jump from the previous year.

Cozumel and Costa Maya continue to reign supreme as the top two cruise destinations in Mexico. As we detailed in our recent report on Cozumel’s tourism explosion, the island is seeing record arrivals, solidifying its place as a global powerhouse.
Beach Safety Upgrade: 45 Lifeguards Deployed
With record crowds comes a record need for safety. The city isn’t taking chances with the millions of tourists hitting the water this month.
A force of 45 lifeguards (30 from Civil Protection and 15 from the Fire Department) has been deployed to maintain surveillance on public beaches.
The “Insider” Safety Brief:

- Coverage Hours: 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
- The Flag Rule: If you see a Red Flag, stay out. As we always remind travelers in our ultimate beach flag guide, having a lifeguard present doesn’t mean you can ignore the ocean’s warnings.
The “Ruta Mar” Launches: Free Beach Access (But Mostly For Locals)
Let’s talk about the newest addition to the city’s transit map: the “Ruta Mar.” Mayor Ana Paty Peralta kicked off January by launching this free bus service designed to get residents from the city outskirts to the beach.
Now, if you are staying in Downtown Cancun (Centro) and saw “Free Beach Bus” in the headlines, you might be tempted to hunt one down. Here is the insider reality check: You probably shouldn’t.

While the price tag (free) is appealing, these busses are designed specifically for local families living in residential neighborhoods like El Torito and Tres Reyes—areas that are far from the tourist hubs. They do not run along the main avenues where downtown hotels and hostels are located.
The “Pro-Tip” For Downtown Travelers: If you are staying near the ADO Bus Station, Parque de las Palapas, or anywhere along Avenida Tulum, the standard R-1 or R-2 bus remains your best friend.

- The Cost: It’s still only 12 Pesos (approx. $0.60 USD).
- The Convenience: They run every 2–3 minutes, 24/7, and pick you up right in front of your hotel.
- The Verdict: Don’t waste valuable vacation time trying to find a “Free Bus” stop in a residential neighborhood just to save 60 cents. Hop on the R-1, enjoy the AC (usually), and you’ll be on the sand in 15 minutes.
That said, the “Ruta Mar” is still great news for tourists because it reduces the number of cars on the road. More locals on busses means less traffic on Kukulcán Boulevard, which is a win for everyone.
