While most Cancun tourists use public transportation, taxis, Uber, and private transportation to get around, many choose to rent a vehicle while visiting too.

This is particularly the case for travelers who fly into Cancun and plan to explore beyond the popular vacation destination.

Those individuals will be happy to hear that a new rule will forgive the first two minor traffic offenses for Cancun tourists.

The New Rule

Under the new rule that will go into effect on December 19th, Cancun tourists will be forgiven for up to two minor traffic offenses when visiting.

These include offenses like speeding, parking infractions, and running stop signs, for example.

Serious offenses, like drinking and driving will not fall under this rule.

How It Works

According to the available information regarding the new rule, it will work through the use of digital cards that will be given to tourists renting a vehicle.

Initially, officials are making 10,000 cards available that will be given to car rental companies in Cancun, which will then be given to each tourist upon picking up their vehicle.

The digital card will keep track of each traffic infraction an individual commits.

Reason For The New Rule

Officials are making it clear that this is not a free pass to break traffic rules.

They commented that they “are not encouraging tourists to commit faults since they are even going to have the regulations in Spanish and English for the park they know what is or is not allowed. However, if we believe that it is important to be able to detonate these strategies in favor of providing a better service, but also to shield themselves.”

The rule will help tourists avoid having to pay fines those first two times, but not for offenses after that.

Renting A Car In Cancun

Just like at any other airport, there are car rental companies at Cancun International Airport, and renting one from the airport saves you the trouble of having to find pricey transportation.

Car rental prices vary, and you might want to include extra coverage just to be safe.

For the car and extra coverage, you can expect to pay at least $30 a day.

Tips For Driving In The Mexican Caribbean

Driving in the Mexican Caribbean isn’t that much different than driving in the States.

You drive on the same side of the road, using your phone while driving is illegal, and there are posted speed limits to follow.

There are also a few differences. For example, the stop lights may go from flashing yellow or flashing red before turning red.

It’s also important to remember that speed signs are in kilometers.

Additionally, it’s also suggested that tourists use toll roads when possible.

Why Rent A Car In Cancun

If you’re just planning to spend your vacation in Cancun, you really don’t need to rent a car, although it does make getting to and from the airport easier.

The real reason to rent a car, though, is to explore outside of Cancun.

From Mayan ruins to cenotes and the many charming towns in between, there is plenty to see beyond Cancun too.

Why Renting A Car In Cancun Will Be Less Necessary Soon

The first section of the Maya Train project was just inaugurated, and it will be fully operational by early 2024.

It will run throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, giving tourists another option to explore the region.

Its affordability and range will make renting a car even less necessary in the future, but for now, tourists can rest assured that they’ll be given a break for a minor infraction.
