For some time now, taxis have not been the most well-liked form of transportation used by visitors to get from Cancun Airport to the Hotel Zone or around the city.
And since platforms like Uber have entered the game, the situation has only gotten worse.
The dissatisfaction of tourists with the taxi services in Cancun began with them charging inflated prices, but the battle between taxi and Uber drivers only added to the problem.
But now, new rules for all transportation providers in Cancun have been introduced to keep tourists safe.

There are a number of transportation providers available to use in Cancun, and one was introduced very recently.
The most popular ones are taxis, motorcycle taxis, and Uber, but Rappi also operates in the city.
Additionally, Didi, an app that can be used by taxi drivers and private transportation providers, also launched its services recently in Cancun, with other Mexican Caribbean destinations to follow.

Oversight And Regulations For Transportation Providers
The rules for the different transportation service providers in Cancun are not always clear-cut and easy to understand.
In the past, taxis have not had meters or set rates, and Ubers are able to operate under different rules that allow them to charge less and profit more.
While this has caused competition between the different types of service providers, which gives visitors the opportunity to save money, it also causes a lot of confusion.

What This Has Meant For Tourists
Tourists who visit Cancun have basically had three main choices for transportation, taxis, Uber, and private transportation.
Of course, buses and shuttles are an option too, but the most commonly used forms of transportation are those three.
Without a lot of oversight and regulations, transportation in Cancun has been considerably pricey, with taxis charging as much as $65 or more to get to and from the airport and Hotel Zone.

The New Rules For Transportation Service Providers
The new rules for transportation service providers in Cancun, including Uber, Didi, Rappi, and motorcycle taxis, came into effect this past weekend.
The rules include provisions that will help keep tourists safe and protect them from being overcharged.
It applies to all providers that use digital platforms to offer their services.
New Provisions To Keep Tourists Safe
In addition to helping protect tourists, these new provisions will also help protect drivers using the platforms as well.
Some of the provisions include:
- Requiring the use of voice and video recording equipment in transport vehicles.
- The requirement to use GPS in transportation service provider vehicles.
- Allowing the use of digital and/or physical panic buttons.
Other New Rules For Transportation Platform Drivers
In addition to being required to obtain the appropriate permits or permissions to operate, transportation platform drivers will also have to meet a number of other requirements.
According to officials, “they must prove that they have the corresponding training in terms of action and safety protocols, especially in terms of gender equality, as well as regarding the prevention and eradication of sexual harassment and all forms of gender violence.”
Additionally, drivers must refrain from using anything that doesn’t allow passengers to see their faces, like bandanas, hats, or glasses.
Transportation In Cancun
While transportation through digital service providers, including the Didi Taxi platform, will now be much more safe going forward, there are other options.
Private transportation is one of the most popular options because you can book in advance and have your driver waiting for you at the airport.
While it may be a bit pricey, it’s a great way to arrive in Cancun and get your vacation started.
