Although the Maya Train officially launched in late December, only a small portion of the railway project is currently operational.

In a recent press conference on the state of the groundbreaking infrastructure project, Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador shared some important updates concerning the Maya Train’s timeline.

According to the head of the Maya Train company, Óscar Águila, the completion of the 5th, 6th, and 7th sections of the Maya Train will allow travelers to effortlessly explore a number of the main archeological ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula.

While no official timeline has been given for the launching of the new train sections, authorities expect the routes to be operational by the end of February. Until then, travelers can continue to use the existing Maya Train routes.

The latest update is especially welcomed news for Cancun travelers, who are set to benefit tremendously from the increased public transit options offered by the new railway system.

Among the most significant advances is the completion of the fifth section of the Maya Train, which will connect Cancun International Airport to Tulum, a route that is expected to see particularly high demand from travelers.

Meanwhile, the Maya Train’s sixth section – which spans 256 kilometers – will link Tulum with Chetumal, the state capital of Quintana Roo and a vibrant cultural hotspot.

Lastly, the 7th section of the railway system will connect Chetumal with Escárcega, Chetumal.

Work on the northern half of the 5th section of the Maya Train – connecting Cancun to Playa del Carmen – is also seeing excellent progress.

According to the latest statistics, which were published yesterday, the Maya Train has already carried more than 15,000 passengers in its first month of operations, proving the railway system’s immense potential.

The completion of even more Train Maya sections means that travelers will soon be able to travel directly from Cancun to southern Quintana Roo. Reaching hotspots like Tulum’s Archeological Zone as well as Chetumal’s stunning ruins will be easier than ever.

Travelers can purchase Maya Train tickets on the organization’s official website. With demand for the new railway project soaring, travelers are rushing to purchase tickets ahead of their arrival to the Mexican Caribbean. Tickets are currently available for a number of routes, with more tickets gradually being released for public sale.

Alongside the Maya Train, the launching of Tulum International Airport is expected to boost tourists’ mobility in southern Quintana Roo, a region that has thus far lacked comprehensive public transit options.
