This summer in Cancun and the Riviera Maya is all about sun, sand, and serious security. We’re talking a full-scale deployment: over 7,000 troops and police have just landed in paradise as part of “Operation Summer Vacation 2025,” and they’re not here for the margaritas.
Don’t be surprised if your relaxing day on the beach includes the unusual sight of a soldier in full tactical gear patrolling nearby. While you’re working on your tan, they’ll be on alert, ensuring your biggest worry is whether to order another round of tacos. This massive, coordinated effort is a clear message: Cancun is taking tourist safety more seriously than ever.

Operation: Keep The Good Times Rolling
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this playbook; a similar force was deployed to keep the peace during the busy spring travel rush earlier this year.
This isn’t just a subtle increase in police presence; it’s a major, publicly announced operation to protect the more than two million tourists expected to flood the Mexican Caribbean this summer. The official kick-off, led by Governor Mara Lezama in Cancun, brought together municipal, state, and federal agencies with a single goal: to safeguard every visitor and ensure a safe and secure environment.
The mission is also about protecting a massive economic boom. With a projected impact of over two billion dollars, guaranteeing a safe vacation is the top priority to ensure that prosperity is shared and the region’s reputation remains golden.

By The Numbers: Who’s Watching The Water (And The Nightclubs)?
The scale of the deployment is immense. Julio César Gómez Torrez, the Secretary of Citizen Security, confirmed a combined state and municipal force of 5,560 officers. This includes a surge of 1,314 state police and a fleet of over 600 vehicles, including patrol cars, all-terrain vehicles for the beaches, and motorcycle units.
Crucially for visitors, the force includes 200 specialized Tourist Police officers deployed in Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, and Playa del Carmen, specifically trained to provide guidance and assistance. On top of that, 634 Civil Protection personnel are on standby to respond to any emergencies, with a special focus on the beaches.

The Big Guns: Military Muscle On Patrol
To ensure a formidable presence, the armed forces are a key part of the operation. The Ministry of National Defense and the Navy are deploying a combined 714 troops to the coast and major tourist areas, while the National Guard has assigned 738 of its own troops to patrol highways, the airport, and other strategic points. It’s a level of security designed to be both a deterrent and a reassurance.

Where To Expect The Increased Presence
This security blanket will be cast over all the places you want to be. The areas subject to increased surveillance include:
- Beaches and cenotes
- The airport and bus terminals
- Banks and shopping centers
- Bars, restaurants, and nightclubs

So, while the sight of armed troops on a beach might be jarring at first, savvy travelers will understand it for what it is: a powerful and proactive effort to ensure that your summer vacation in the Mexican Caribbean is nothing but safe, secure, and relaxing.

My'burning'question is this Why would anyone other than than partying care-free students & the foolish even THINK of going to fiercely hot & torridly steamy Mexico in the worst possible season! Summer?? Really? Mexico is a perfect winter & shoulder season destination. As my ex-pat MX resident pals- escapees all from our now gone neo-fascist govmnt-often remind me -Summer in Mexico is to be avoided!

Why is this abnormal? I've gone to Cancun and Rivera Maya a dozen times in the last five years across all different months and there are always patrols. Between the military police, locals, and ATVs it isn't abnormal on the beach at any giving time. This is an article to create hype and concern!

I've been there many times and have never had any issues! There have always been heavily armored guards in certain places and that should be very reassuring. This is a beautiful destination and well worth the trip, plus, all the locals I've spent time with have been wonderful people. Don't let these 'hype' articles control your thoughts.

@Mari strand, Use the hotel/resort transportation. It may cost a little more but at least your cost won't change and you are safe.

@Eddie, I have vacationed in Cancun annually for 15 years, and I have experienced nothing but honesty and helpfulness from the Mexican and Maya population. Viva Cancun!

@Eddie, judging by Mari's post, I'm going to guess that she's not from the USA. Even in the USA, there are scams, so it's not just something people encounter in other countries. Crime is world wide and knows no boundaries.

@Mari strand, stay in USA... don't come to Mexico
