Playa del Carmen officials have taken another step forward in bolstering safety for travelers thanks to the launching of new road safety patrol units.
The new units, called Ángeles Verdes (Green Angels), will patrol Playa del Carmen’s main roads & highways, providing travelers with an additional layer of assistance and safety.
Playa del Carmen has recently implemented a number of key measures aimed at making the coastal destination safer as travel numbers continue to skyrocket in 2024.

New Police Unit To Contribute To Improving Safety For Playa del Carmen Travelers
Playa del Carmen is one of the hottest destinations this winter, with resorts in the coastal destination seeing occupancy rates of up to 85% despite the end of the high season. The crown jewel of the Riviera Maya is home to some of the top resorts and beaches in the region, resulting in a huge travel influx.
And with the launching of the Maya Train quickly approaching, officials in the coastal hotspot are gearing up for an extremely busy spring. With so many travelers expected to flock to Playa del Carmen this year, safety is a priority for local decision-makers.

That’s why this week, authorities announced the deployment of a new law enforcement unit called the Ángles Verdes to provide assistance to travelers and to help tackle crime affecting visitors.
While the Ángeles Verdes has maintained a visible presence in Mexico for over 60 years, Playa del Carmen has thus far not participated in the nationwide scheme.
The decision comes as Playa del Carmen officials continue to implement a host of measures to improve safety for millions of travelers. From adding new lifeguard towers to deploying more law enforcement during peak travel times, Playa del Carmen is reinforcing a culture of safety, especially when it comes to protecting travelers.

The deployment of new Green Angels units will further help the city become even safer for travelers, making Playa del Carmen one of the best choices for safety-conscious visitors.
Travelers can expect to see the new police units sometime this year, although authorities are yet to announce an official timeline concerning the implementation of the new scheme.

There are currently some 700 law enforcement officers participating in the program nationwide. Playa del Carmen travelers can identify Green Angel units from the green color scheme used by officers involved in the program.
For now, officials have stated that the new units will primarily patrol the National Highway 307, which leads to Playa del Carmen.
In addition to boosting traffic safety, which has been one of the primary safety concerns affecting travelers, the new Green Angel units will provide general guidance to travelers on city streets. Visitors can also contact the free hotline by dialing 078 when encountering issues like petty crime.
