Rare Blood Moon Will Be Visible In Cancun: Here’s How Tourists Can Witness It

Share The Article

If you happen to be waking up early in Cancun this Tuesday, March 3, you are in for an absolute treat.

Grab a cup of coffee and step out onto your resort balcony, because the Mexican Caribbean is getting a front-row seat to a spectacular astronomical event: a Total Lunar Eclipse, famously known as a “Blood Moon.

According to Jimmy Herrera, president of the Astronomical Society of Quintana Roo, the timing lines up perfectly for a stunning pre-dawn show over the ocean.

Here is exactly when and how you can catch it.

The Viewing Schedule

You don’t need to stay up all night, but you will need to set an early alarm. Here is how the morning will unfold:

  • 3:44 AM: The eclipse officially begins, but the visual changes are super subtle at this point.
  • 4:49 AM: The real action starts. You will see the moon clearly begin to enter the Earth’s shadow.
  • 6:00 AM (The Peak): This is the moment you want to be awake for. The eclipse will be fully visible, and the moon will take on that famous, striking reddish-copper hue.
  • 7:03 AM: The moon will emerge from the shadow just as the sun begins to rise, giving you a gorgeous, colorful dawn over the Caribbean Sea.

Quick Disclaimer: As with any stargazing event, this is entirely dependent on the weather! If a rogue coastal storm rolls in and brings heavy cloud cover, it might be tough to spot. But if the skies stay clear, it is going to be incredible.

Forget The Myths (And The Glasses)

Unlike a solar eclipse, you absolutely do not need any special protective glasses to watch a lunar eclipse. It is 100% safe to view with the naked eye.

Herrera also pointed out that you can safely ignore the old generational myths. You don’t need to wear a red ribbon or pin a safety pin to your clothes to protect yourself or your baby (yes, those are real local superstitions!).

It is simply a beautiful alignment of the sun, Earth, and moon—no celestial battles or bad omens involved.
