Environmental authorities in Mexico have permanently closed a popular dolphin attraction in the Riviera Maya because of deeply concerning mistreatment of the marine animals there according to local reports. The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) declared the definitive closure of the Dolphinaris Barceló facility. Along with shutting its doors, the company has been slapped with a significant fine of $445,000 USD (7,526,240 pesos).

Shocking Violations Uncovered During Inspection
The drastic action comes after an in-depth inspection that kicked off in February. What investigators found was deeply concerning, revealing at least seven significant violations of animal welfare regulations. These included using dolphins in shows and even during medical treatments without proper authorization. Visible closure seals have now been placed at the facility.

Dolphin Injured in Unreported Stunt
One particularly disturbing case involved a dolphin named Mincho. Back in 2020, Mincho reportedly crashed into a concrete slab while performing an unauthorized stunt. Shockingly, this incident was never reported to the authorities, a clear violation of the law. Even more concerning, Mincho was put back to work just two days after the accident, despite being prescribed 15 days of medical leave. Tragically, Mincho now suffers from severe vision problems in both eyes and can no longer participate in high-impact activities.

More Irregularities Found at the Facility
The investigation also unearthed other troubling practices at Dolphinaris Barceló. These included inappropriate interactions between the public and the dolphins, overcrowding during sessions, a lack of regular medical check-ups for the animals, and water temperatures in the enclosures that exceeded permitted levels.
Criminal Charges Filed
The seriousness of the findings has led Profepa to take further action. The agency has filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General’s Office for potential crimes against marine mammals, as outlined in Article 420 of the Federal Penal Code.

Authorities Send Strong Message
Mariana Boy Tamborrell, the head of Profepa, made it clear that the agency is taking a firm stance on animal welfare. “The law is clear: anyone who cares for marine mammals must guarantee their well-being. The closure of Dolphinaris Barceló is a firm step in that direction,” she stated. This closure sends a strong message that facilities that fail to provide humane treatment for wildlife will face serious consequences.
What Travelers Can Do To Support Ethical Treatment of Dolphins

For travelers who cherish wildlife and wish to ensure their tourism choices support ethical treatment, avoiding facilities with potential animal mistreatment is a conscious and impactful decision.
- Do your research: Before booking any animal-related experience, take time to investigate the facility.
- Look for conservation focus: Prioritize places that emphasize wildlife conservation and ethical interactions.
- Seek reputable sanctuaries: Choose sanctuaries where animals are not forced to perform unnatural behaviors.
- Read online reviews: Check reviews from other travelers for insights into animal welfare.
- Be wary of entertainment-focused venues: Avoid places that primarily focus on animal shows and close, unnatural contact.
- Opt for respectful observation: Choose tours that allow you to see animals in their natural habitats from a distance.
