Security Operation Launched In Tulum To Protect Tourists This Winter

All sorts of activities are taking place in Tulum right now, with the opening of the Tulum Airport and the preparations for the inauguration of the Maya Train.

Add to that the massive arrival of tourists for the holiday season, and you can see why now is a good time to enhance security in the destination.

It is because this is one of the busiest times of year that a security operation has been launched by officials in Tulum to protect tourists this winter.

Tulum’s Winter Security Operation

The security operation that has been launched is referred to as the Guadalupe Reyes Security Operation.

During this time, security is enhanced during the month of December and during the first part of January in order to protect locals and the influx of tourists that arrive in Tulum for the holidays.

The increased security will be provided by the different branches of law enforcement, including the National Guard, Navy, Civil Protection, Municipal Police, and State Police.

How Safe Is Tulum?

Tulum is one of the safest places to visit in the Mexican Caribbean.

While there is crime in Tulum, just like anywhere else, it’s typically more petty crime than anything else.

This is particularly the case when it comes to tourists being affected by criminal activity, which is rare.

What Increased Security Means For Tulum Tourists

During times when security is increased in Tulum, tourists should be prepared to see armed guards patrolling tourist areas.

This should not alarm you as they are there to prevent crime rather than being there as a result of a crime.

One official commented about the operation, saying that they “want to inform you that you can rest easy to enjoy your vacation, since all the security and emergency forces of the three orders of government are prepared to give you all the attention and security you deserve.”

How Busy Is Busy – Tourist Arrivals In Tulum

Tulum gets about 1.5 million visitors annually, many of which are American tourists.

Last year, over 70 percent of the destination’s visitors were from the U.S.

The busiest season in Tulum, like in the rest of the Mexican Caribbean, is the period from December to April.

If you visit during this time, you can expect to share the beaches with thousands of tourists.

How The Tulum Airport Is Affecting Tourist Numbers This Winter

While the Tulum Airport has already opened, flights are not yet available for American tourists and won’t be until early next year.

That doesn’t mean that the new airport won’t affect tourist numbers this winter, though, as a number of domestic airlines are already offering flights for national travelers.

This could result in even more tourists visiting the destination this winter than usual.

Why Tulum Is Such A Popular Winter Destination

Like any Mexican Caribbean vacation destination, Tulum’s amazing beaches are the main attraction.

There are a number of other things that make Tulum the popular destination that it is too, though.

Seaside Mayan ruins, a charming town with locally owned bars and restaurants, numerous cenotes, and many other attractions are what draw tourists to Tulum.

Getting To Tulum This Winter

You may not be able to fly into Tulum Airport yet, but there are plenty of flights from the U.S. to Cancun, and Cancun Airport is only about an hour and a half from Tulum.

You can fly into Cancun and book transportation to Tulum, which starts at around $200 for a roundtrip.

Starting in early 2024, getting to Tulum from Cancun Airport will be even easier when the Maya Train’s Cancun to Tulum section is completed and operational.

On Christmas night, three corrupt traffic police on Rt 307 in Tulum Mexico shook us down for every dollar we had. They even took 7 dollars from our eight year old daughter. We hate this place, for the same beaches go to Florida or the Caribbean.
