Strong Dollar Benefitting U.S. Travelers In Cancun

Last Updated

American tourists headed to Cancun for their summer holidays will benefit from the U.S dollar’s strong performance compared to the Mexican peso. This means that travelers will be able to acquire more local currency and thus purchase good and services at better value.

Cancun is an excellent choice for tourists this summer in light of the strengthened U.S dollar. With late-summer getaways still available at reasonable prices, a lot of travelers have their eyes set on the Mexican Caribbean. The U.S currency has been making headlines recently, thanks to its relative strength compared to major world currencies such as the Euro. It is also performing well compared to the Mexican peso, effectively giving travelers a discount when traveling to the popular destination.

The value of the U.S dollar is at its strongest in years. As a result, U.S travelers can acquire more local currency in countless destinations around the world, including the Mexican Caribbean. For the millions of U.S tourists expected to spend their vacations there this year, this means that they can purchase more goods and services when converting dollars to pesos.

It’s also good news for the local economy as it helps improve the competitiveness of the Mexican Caribbean in comparison to other Latin American hotspots such as Jamaica, Punta Cana, or the Bahamas. However, there’s no saying how long the U.S dollar will continue to perform well, prompting many travelers to book last-minute vacations to profit from the unprecedented economic situation.

Thanks to the favorable exchange rate, U.S travelers can enjoy goods and services for less compared to before. From all-inclusive resorts to tours, travelers are encouraged to book in advance to lock in the favorable exchange rate.

According to Gabriela Siller, director of economic and financial analysis for BASE, a local bank specializing in currency exchange, local tourism operators can use the situation to their advantage to attract more visitors. Although inflation has been an issue for local consumers, the situation isn’t as dire for tourists, especially those coming from the United States or other economies with a stronger currency.

Visitors aren’t the only ones who will profit from the situation. Hotels too are especially likely to see their profits grow, as around 70% of their revenue is in dollars. Meanwhile, tourists using U.S dollars get more bang for their buck when paying for local services such as museums, tours, and restaurants.

Although a strong U.S dollar comes with many benefits – especially for international travelers – it also comes with some drawbacks. Inflation, which is slowing economic growth in the wake of the post-covid recovery – can lower the increase in purchasing power. Inflation has also been making the headlines in Cancun, where businesses across the board have had to hike up prices. Restaurants in Cancun, for example, have reported rising prices by 10% to account for greater inflation.

Take This Into Account When Using U.S Dollars In Mexico

A strong U.S dollar will be useful for purchasing goods and services in Mexico. From hotels to excursions, as well as food and other expenses, tourists can purchase more for less. However, it’s important to keep a few things in mind when traveling to Mexico with U.S dollars.

First, if traveling with cash, you should exchange your dollars for Mexican pesos. This can be done at several locations, either at the airport before departure or after arrival. Visitors can also exchange dollars for pesos at many large resorts, as well as local exchange bureaus. You can check online to see the different exchange rates, and it’s a good idea to look for locations offering the lowest commissions.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while many establishments such as hotels accept U.S dollars, they may charge more than they would in Mexican pesos. Moreover, they may round up prices higher when paying with dollars, so it’s a good idea to convert first. Experts also recommend booking trips in advance to lock in the favorable exchange rate
