Dropping thousands of dollars on a 5-star Cancun vacation should guarantee a flawless, luxurious week in paradise. But if you spend a few minutes scrolling through recent reviews of the top-rated resorts in the Mexican Caribbean, you will quickly notice a pattern. Even the most expensive, highly-rated properties suffer from the exact same frustrating issues.
It is incredibly disappointing to show up expecting five-star luxury and instead feel like you are just a number on a mega-resort assembly line.
Here are the five most common complaints travelers have about luxury Cancun resorts, and exactly how you can avoid them on your next trip.

1. The “Beautiful Food Jail”
The Complaint: The resort boasts 12 different “gourmet” specialty restaurants, from steakhouses to Italian. But when you sit down, the service is rushed, the food is lukewarm, and your steak tastes exactly like the mass-produced meat from the lunch buffet, just plated nicely. Because your resort is 45 minutes away from town, you feel trapped in a “beautiful food jail.”
How to Avoid It: Stop booking massive mega-resorts simply because they boast the highest number of restaurants. Quality always beats quantity. Look for smaller, boutique all-inclusives that focus heavily on culinary experiences. Alternatively, if you stay in the central Hotel Zone, plan to eat off-property a few nights. The Hotel Zone has incredible, true 5-star dining options like Harry’s Steakhouse or Puerto Madero that will absolutely blow resort food out of the water.

2. The 6:00 AM “Towel Game”
The Complaint: You walk down to the stunning infinity pool at 9:00 AM after a relaxing breakfast, only to find every single lounge chair has been “claimed” with a paperback book or a single flip-flop by people who woke up at dawn and went back to sleep.
How to Avoid It: First, check if your resort actively enforces the “60-Minute Rule” (where staff removes items from abandoned chairs). If you don’t want to deal with the stress at all, pay for the room upgrade. Booking the “Club Level” or “Preferred Tier” at most luxury resorts gives you exclusive access to private, VIP-only pools and beach clubs where seating is strictly monitored and never an issue.

3. The “Nickel and Diming” Illusion
The Complaint: You paid for a 5-star all-inclusive package, but when you order a premium tequila, you are hit with an upcharge. You want to sit in a shaded Bali bed by the pool? That’s $150 a day. You want a steak at dinner? That’s a $40 premium fee. The constant “nickel and diming” completely ruins the luxury vibe.
How to Avoid It: You have to read the fine print before you book. Many luxury resorts use tiered wristband systems. If you want true, top-shelf liquor and unrestricted access to amenities without constantly opening your wallet, you either need to book the absolute highest room category at that specific hotel, or specifically seek out ultra-luxury brands that operate on a strict, no-tiers “everything included” philosophy.

4. The Timeshare “Welcome” Ambush
The Complaint: You just arrived, you’re tired from the flight, and the front desk points you toward the “concierge” to grab your welcome drink and resort map. Suddenly, you are trapped in a high-pressure sales pitch to attend a 90-minute “VIP breakfast” that is actually a brutal timeshare presentation.
How to Avoid It: The moment they offer you a “free spa credit,” a “heavily discounted excursion,” or a “special VIP breakfast” in exchange for a short morning tour of the property, politely say, “No thank you, I am not interested in any presentations,” grab your room keys, and walk away. Do not engage or try to be overly polite, or they will keep pushing.

5. The Musty, Outdated Rooms
The Complaint: The lobby is breathtaking and the pools are pristine, but when you open your room door, it smells heavily of mildew, the AC rattles loudly, and the furniture looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2010.
How to Avoid It: The humid, salty Caribbean air destroys hotel rooms incredibly fast. A “5-star” resort that was built 15 years ago and hasn’t been updated will feel like a 3-star motel inside. When researching a resort, sort the reviews by “Newest” (not “Most Relevant”) and specifically search the page for the words “recently renovated” or “updated.” If the rooms haven’t been touched in five years, look elsewhere.

Instead of listing "how to avoid", why not list resorts that do not have the issue listed. That would be significantly more helpful. I would love a list of non mega resorts where I don't have to pay a premium for club/upgraded access just to find a chair by the pool/beach.
