Despite the winter travel frenzy quieting down, new figures reveal that resorts in Cancun and other hotspots across the Mexican Caribbean are nearly fully sold out this February.

That trend is likely to continue for over a month, culminating with the hectic Easter travel period in late March. With occupancy rates of over 90%, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are seeing travel demand skyrocket.

The launching of the Maya Train later this year as well as the inauguration of several new nonstop flights mean that the sun-soaked region will only continue to soar in popularity.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the most popular resort hotspots in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean this winter.

Cancun Continues To Dominate As The Most Popular Choice For Travelers

Cancun remains by far the most popular destination in the Mexican Caribbean according to the latest figures, which were published this week by the regional hotel and resort association.

The coastal hotspot thus retains its lead over other nearby cities, confirming Cancun’s position as the top choice for travelers headed to the Mexican Caribbean.

Cancun’s occupancy rate stands at an impressive 88% as of February 22, meaning that nearly all hotel rooms are currently sold out in the sunny destination.

That’s despite the fact that the peak of the winter high season is already over, with late December and early January being the busiest period for travel to Cancun.

According to the latest projections, Cancun will continue to see occupancy rates of between 80% to 90% throughout the remainder of the month. In March, occupancy rates will dip slightly, rebounding towards the end of the month due to the hectic Easter holidays.

Cancun currently boasts a whopping 39,000 hotel rooms, placing the city firmly in first place as the Mexican Caribbean destination with the largest room inventory.

Isla Mujeres Reports Huge Occupancy Rate Amid Resort Construction Boom

Although home to much fewer hotel rooms than its mainland counterpart, the island destination of Isla Mujeres currently has among the highest occupancy rates in the Mexican Caribbean, with nearly 92% of all rooms sold out.

The tropical island has around 8,500 hotel rooms distributed among dozens of resorts and smaller properties, ranging from luxurious 5-star resorts (including the recently opened Impression Isla Mujeres By Secrets) to modest hotels.

Situated just 15 minutes by ferry from Cancun, Isla Mujeres remains a wildly popular choice thanks to its stunning beaches, many of which are ranked as some of the best in the world.

As the sargassum season approaches, many travelers will undoubtedly opt for Isla Mujeres, which typically has much less sargassum than other coastal destinations like Playa del Carmen.

Puerto Morelos Sees Popularity Rise As Alternative To Cancun

Puerto Morelos is currently one of the trendiest resort hotspots close to Cancun; in fact, this charming coastal village has a nearly 90% occupancy rate this month, a figure which has grown steadily over the months.

Located just south of Cancun, Puerto Morelos is a popular choice for travelers seeking peace of mind and local authenticity. Known for its excellent foodie culture and lush nature, this growing destination is currently home to over 6,000 hotel rooms.

And while that’s just a fraction of Cancun’s room inventory, Puerto Morelos is making huge investments to attract more travelers. Last month, city officials announced an ambitious plan to improve the state of local beaches in an effort to draw more visitors.
