New statistics show that several Mexican Caribbean hotspots are attracting a surprisingly large number of travelers despite the ongoing low season.

These Areas Near Cancun Are Soaring In Popularity Right Now

Fall is a surprisingly good time to visit Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean. The shoulder season, which runs from September to mid-November, is usually the quietest time for the local travel industry, as hotel occupancy dips well below 60%.

But three destinations in the Mexican Caribbean are reporting unusually high occupancy rates as travelers rush to book last-minute deals for fall getaways.

New statistics published by the region’s tourism officials show that Cancun and several other nearby destinations are welcoming above-average numbers of travelers.

According to Jesús Almaguer, head of the region’s hotel association, some 65% of all rooms in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres are currently sold out. The numbers mean that worries over the hurricane season and rising cases of dengue fever aren’t deterring travelers.

In fact, fall is becoming one of the best times to enjoy the Mexican Caribbean. With a range of exciting cultural events and celebrations, international sports tournaments, and sargassum-free beaches, many hotspots in the sun-drenched region are at their best right now.

And with the region attracting a growing number of travelers this year, analysts expect the positive situation to extend well into October. Travel numbers are expected to soar starting in November as temperatures across the U.S. and Canada begin to fall and travelers start flocking to the Mexican Caribbean for their annual winter holidays.

The latest statistical overview shows that Isla Mujeres is the most sought-after destination near Cancun right now, with Costa Mujeres standing out as the location where hotel rooms are most likely to be sold out.

But several destinations just south of Cancun, including Puerto Morelos, are also trending with travelers this fall. Famous for its excellent nature attractions – especially the Ruta de los Cenotes(Cenotes Route), as well as its vibrant culinary scene, Puerto Morelos has become a major hotspot for those seeking an authentic experience.

Head To This Destination To Avoid The Crowds

Travelers heading to Cancun this fall in search of empty beaches and resorts might encounter more people than anticipated. Fortunately, several Mexican Caribbean alternatives offer much fewer crowds, providing a unique window of opportunity to enjoy the region’s splendid beaches.

Tulum, the leading cultural and historical hotspot in Quintana Roo, currently has some of the lowest occupancy rates in the region. Unlike in summer and winter, when travelers flock to witness the location’s historical wonders and trendy downtown bars in droves, things quiet down significantly in Tulum during the fall.

In addition to its beautiful history and well-preserved ruins, the coastal destination boasts a number of Platinum-certified beaches, including Playa Pescadores. And this fall, Tulum’s beaches are in pristine condition thanks to minimal sargassum levels and new efforts to bolster cleanliness.
