You’ve done it. After months of planning, you’ve finally touched down at the bustling Cancun International Airport (CUN). You’ve breezed through the new e-Gates, grabbed your luggage, and now only one thing stands between you and a margarita by the pool: the transfer to your hotel. But how long will that final leg of the journey actually take?
The answer varies dramatically. A trip to a nearby resort can be just 15 minutes, while a journey to a secluded Tulum beach can take hours. Knowing the real-world travel time is the key to planning your transportation, managing your expectations, and starting your vacation smoothly.

Here at The Cancun Sun, we’ve created the definitive guide to travel times from the airport to every major destination in the region.
(Note: These are average times for private or shared shuttles. Times can increase by 20-30% during peak traffic hours, typically 4-6 p.m. on weekdays.)
Cancun
These are the most common destinations within the immediate Cancun area.
- Cancun Hotel Zone – South End (Km 17-22)
- Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes
- Why: This is the first section of the Hotel Zone you reach from the airport, home to popular resorts like the Westin, Club Med, and Sun Palace.
- Cancun Hotel Zone – Middle (Km 9-16)
- Estimated Time: 25-35 minutes
- Why: The heart of the Hotel Zone. This time gets you to the area around La Isla Shopping Village and major resorts like the JW Marriott and Secrets The Vine. The new Nichupté Bridge can significantly reduce this time.
- Cancun Hotel Zone – North End (The “7”) (Km 3-8.5)
- Estimated Time: 30-40 minutes
- Why: This is the top part of the “7,” home to the main nightlife area (Party Center) and resorts like the Hyatt Ziva. It requires driving further up the strip, but the new bridge will provide a major shortcut soon.

- Cancun Downtown (El Centro)
- Estimated Time: 30-40 minutes
- Why: A popular area for budget hotels and Airbnbs. The route requires passing the Hotel Zone entrance and heading directly into the city.
- Puerto Juarez / Gran Puerto Ferry Terminal
- Estimated Time: 35-45 minutes
- Why: This is the crucial travel time for anyone staying on Isla Mujeres, as this is where you catch the main passenger ferry.

Riviera Maya
These popular destinations are listed in geographical order heading south from the airport.
- Moon Palace / Riviera Cancun Area
- Estimated Time: 15-20 minutes
- Why: This major resort zone is one of the closest to the airport, located just south of the main terminals.
- Puerto Morelos
- Estimated Time: 25-35 minutes
- Why: The first charming fishing town south of the Moon Palace area.
- Playa del Carmen – Downtown / Playacar
- Estimated Time: 50-65 minutes
- Why: This is the most common destination in Playa, covering most hotels, the Playacar resorts, and the ferry terminal to Cozumel.

- Xcaret / Xplor Area Hotels
- Estimated Time: 60-75 minutes
- Why: A specific cluster of major destination hotels (like Hotel Xcaret) located just south of Playa del Carmen.
- Akumal
- Estimated Time: 75-90 minutes
- Why: A key destination famous for its sea turtles, covering Akumal Bay and the large Grand Palladium complex.
- Tulum – Town (Pueblo) & Aldea Zama
- Estimated Time: 90 minutes – 2 hours
- Why: This gets you to the downtown area and the large Aldea Zama development. The new Tulum Airport (TQO) is now a much closer option for these locations.
- Tulum – Beach Zone
- Estimated Time: 2 hours – 2.5 hours+
- Why: Travel time increases significantly once you hit the often-congested Tulum beach road. Reaching hotels at the far southern end can take the longest.

Tier 3: The Islands (Drive + Ferry)
These require a multi-part journey.
- Isla Mujeres
- Estimated Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 15 min total
- (Drive to Puerto Juarez: 35-45 min + Ferry Ride: 20-25 min)
- Cozumel
- Estimated Time: 1 hour 45 min – 2 hours total
- (Drive to Playa del Carmen Ferry: 50-65 min + Ferry Ride: 45 min)
- Holbox
- Estimated Time: 2.5 – 3 hours total
- (Drive to Chiquilá Ferry Terminal: approx. 2 hours + Ferry Ride: 25 min)
Knowing these real-world times allows you to book your transportation with confidence and helps you decide if that far-flung, secluded resort is truly worth the extra journey! Happy travels!
