If you live in the Midwest and want to visit the Mexican Caribbean, you usually have to deal with long layovers. Travelers often waste half a day waiting in huge hubs like Dallas or Houston just to get to the beach.

But things are finally changing! Tulsa, Oklahoma, just made a huge move to make summer vacations much easier. For the first time ever, Tulsa International Airport (TUL) is offering direct, non-stop flights to Cancun.

Here is everything you need to know about this historic new route and how it can save you time on your next beach trip.

✈️ Tulsa’s First-Ever International Flight

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, a packed plane took off from Tulsa and headed straight to the crystal-clear waters of Cancun.

This was a massive milestone for the city. It marked the first time in the airport’s history that it hosted a scheduled commercial international passenger flight.

The new route is operated by Sun Country Airlines, a popular low-cost carrier known for offering cheap fares and a simple, stress-free travel experience.

Sun Country Airlines is launching new twice-weekly nonstop flights from Tulsa (TUL) to Cancun (CUN) starting May 2026, marking the airport's first international route.

📅 When Do The Flights Run?

If you want to skip the layovers, you have two chances each week to catch a ride.

Sun Country Airlines is flying the new Tulsa-to-Cancun route twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. It is the perfect schedule for a quick long weekend at an all-inclusive resort or a full week-long vacation.

Because this is a special summer route, the flights will run from now until August 9, 2026. The airline is using Boeing 737-800 planes for the trip, which have plenty of room with 186 seats.

You might be wondering: Why couldn’t Tulsa fly to Mexico before?

To have international flights, an airport needs a way to process travelers coming back into the United States. To make this new Cancun route possible, Tulsa just opened a brand-new, 45,000-square-foot International Customs facility.

This means when you fly home from Mexico, you do not have to stop at a different U.S. airport just to show your passport.

You get to fly directly back to Oklahoma, clear customs in a fresh, uncrowded building, and head straight home.

🧳 Why This is a Game-Changer

This new flight is a huge win for travelers in Oklahoma and the surrounding states.

Getting to the Riviera Maya is now cheaper and much faster. Instead of spending 6 to 8 hours traveling with connections, you can hop on a plane in Tulsa and be on the beach with a taco in hand in just a few hours.

If you are ready to pack your bags, tickets are already on sale directly through the Sun Country Airlines website!
