Safety is one of travelers’ main concerns when visiting popular resort destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
But in Playa del Carmen, those worries are noticeably less present than elsewhere, thanks to new government measures to tackle crime.
Situated an hour south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen has skyrocketed in popularity to become one of the leading resort destinations in Mexico. With more law enforcement patrolling busy city streets to deter criminals, Playa del Carmen is one of the safest destinations in the country.
As more travelers than ever flock to the Mexican Caribbean this year, here’s why this sunny destination is safer than ever.
More Patrols And Surveillance Cameras Give Playa del Carmen Security Boost
Travel to Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean is growing at record speed in 2023. Although the recent summer season was the busiest on record, winter is expected to be even more heating, with millions of travelers pouring into the region.
Even as the sun-drenched region grows vastly in popularity, security-related concerns remain ever-present. But with new measures to crack down on crime, travelers can generally look forward to a safe and enjoyable vacation.

That’s especially the case in Playa del Carmen, where the local government, led by the popular mayoress Lili Campos, has implemented extensive measures to bolster safety ahead of the high season.
Officials in the popular resort destination have deployed hundreds of law enforcement personnel to patrol the city’s most touristy locations, including its public beaches and main avenues.

Police officers and heavily-armed troops are a common sight across the Mexican Caribbean, but in Playa del Carmen, they have been deployed permanently to deter criminals.
Among other measures, authorities have also installed new surveillance cameras in areas prone to petty crime. Although much less serious than organized crime, theft and scams remain a significant issue across the region. But with new measures intended to catch criminals before they commit wrongdoing, law enforcement agencies are aiming to stop all forms of crime in the popular hotspot.

Playa del Carmen is also home to a growing number of Centros de Atención Inmediata (CAI, or Urgent Assistance Centres), where travelers can report crimes and seek the help of law enforcement. The coastal hotspot now has eight such centers, located along 5th Avenue as well as in Xcalacoco, among other key locations.
But safety in Playa del Carmen extends beyond protecting the physical safety of travelers. With new laws to promote the rights of LGBT travelers, Playa del Carmen is committed to boosting inclusiveness and equality among all visitors, making this one of the most progressive destinations in the region.

Travelers headed to Playa del Carmen this year are advised to opt for accommodations in the city’s downtown area or the resort districts by the coast.
Playa del Carmen Attracts Growing Number Of Digital Nomads
One of Playa del Carmen’s biggest strengths is its vibrant culture and internationally-minded lifestyle. Home to thousands of digital nomads, Playa del Carmen is a magnet for expats.
Aside from boasting some of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly beaches in the Mexican Caribbean, Playa del Carmen is a modern and safe destination. Travelers can find dozens of co-working spaces – such as Nest Coworking and Work Zone Coworking – and hip cafés that cater to a growing international clientele.
@theexperiencelover Went to Playa del Carmen for the first time and gotta say that Ima be back. Only stayed 3 nights and if you’re looking for a quick getaway for a long weekend definitely recommend. What I loved most was that everything was within walking distance. Bars, restaurants, shops, the beach. This is downtown at night and you know I’m guna go out 🔥😎 #playadelcarmen #playadelcarmenmexico #fifthavenueplayadelcarmen #5thavenueplayadelcarmen #mexixo ♬ original sound – Erin – Travel & Experiences
With the busy winter season approaching, officials are implementing measures that will ensure that Playa del Carmen remains a safe and welcoming destination for millions of travelers.
