Situated around 45 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is a trendy island destination that is seeing skyrocketing arrival numbers.
While the island is ideal for longer stays, most travelers stay in Cozumel for shorter periods. Due to the island’s vast size, many visitors opt to explore Cozumel with motorcycles. An efficient and fun way to get around, motorcycles are a great alternative to costly taxis and overcrowded buses.

Despite the growing appeal for travelers, motorcycles come with several risks, especially for visitors who aren’t accustomed to using them. That’s why this winter, officials are paying close attention to Cozumel’s numerous rental firms, who have been accused of causing a worrying number of accidents.
To make matters worse, media reports suggest that travelers without driver’s licenses are renting motorcycles, greatly increasing the probability of life-threatening accidents.

And while most renters meet legal requirements – such as being over 18 and having a valid driver’s license – many drivers are unfamiliar with Cozumel’s driving culture. Combined, these factors have resulted in a spike in the number of accidents, with two deadly crashes reported in 2024 alone.
According to Luis Dzul, a spokesperson for Cozumel’s rental agencies, a growing number of firms on the sunny island are engaging in illegal practices, putting both locals and travelers at risk.

He also added that while more is being done to tackle the issue, insufficient support from local authorities and a weak legal framework are aggravating the situation.
While motorcycles are a great way to explore Cozumel, they should only be used by experienced drivers. Traffic, poor infrastructure, and even crime are all factors that contribute to making motorcycles riskier than other forms of transportation.

You keep saying Motorcycles, but they are not. What is being rented are Scooters (aka mopeds). They have no shifting just a throttle on the hand grip.
