As the island of Holbox, just 61 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Cancun, continues to grow in popularity with visitors, new services are being added to the rural area for the protection of locals and travelers.

The latest is a $4.3 million peso donation in first responder technology which should be available for emergency services on the island of Holbox very soon.

Fire Emergency Response

The very first fire station on the island of Holbox is quickly nearing completion.

It’s the latest move by the State of Quintana Roo government to invest in the growth and development of the island to not only improve the lives of the locals but provide more opportunities for tourism as well.

The first fire emergency response vehicle on Holbox is a shiny 3,500-liter 2017 Ford fire truck the state received for donations totaling $4.3 million pesos.

Meanwhile, the new fire station to house the vehicle is still under construction in the central park area of Holbox.

According to Governor Lezama, the new fire truck will enable a faster response to fire emergencies in the community and help keep locals and visitors safe.

Need For Fire Department Services

The construction of the fire station and delivery of the new fire truck is the fulfillment of a commitment made by Governor Lezama back in November 2022.

About nine months ago there was a devastating fire on the island of Holbox that destroyed two hotels and severely damaged one restaurant.

Several people feverishly tried to extinguish the flames using only buckets. However, it was to no avail.

Luckily, only some tourist passports were lost in the large blaze.

A little more than a year ago, another fire on Holbox scorched another hotel when a fire started in a kitchen and quickly spread to a nearby palapa.

Additional Response Vehicles Added

Along with the new fire truck, the island of Holbox also received four patrol cars, two vehicles for municipal services, and a large dump truck.

The additional vehicles were put directly into service as part of the new Citizen Security Model and the Peace Building Strategy, which has launched in Holbox and the State of Quintana Roo.

According to Governor Lezama, the new vehicles provide much-needed emergency and protective services to the Holbox community which has needed these items for some time.

She added her pride in being able to provide the community with its first fire truck thanks to donations that made it all happen.

More Safety For Visitors

Holbox, while still pretty rural, is making strides to improve its facilities and infrastructure to meet the demands of increased visitors to the island.

Some travelers may actually be against all of the improvements on the island, citing the rural aspect of the community as the actual attraction for visiting Holbox.

After all, Holbox still retains its rural feel with traditional dirt roads and a traditional Mexican beach town laid-back vibe that transports visitors back to how the Yucatan Peninsula used to be.

However, there truly needs to be a balance between the remote quaintness of the beautiful island of Holbox and the need to provide basic emergency services in order to support tourism and development.

The action by Governor Lezama to invest in infrastructure to enhance the safety measures for tourists to the beach destination should make visitors feel more safe and secure to enjoy the island’s beauty as part of their vacation.

The brand new first fire station on the island of Holbox is expected to be completed and in service for both locals and visitors to the beach destination within a couple of weeks.
