Tourists have been anticipating the completion of the Maya Train project ever since the routes were first announced.

Once completed, visitors to the Mexican Caribbean will be able to expand their horizons and explore so much more of the region.

The expected completion date has been December, but now it looks like the opening of at least part of it, the Tulum to Cancun Maya Train route, is being pushed back to January, according to Mexico’s president.

Construction of the Maya Train Route in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico

The Maya Train Project

Construction of the massive Maya Train project started in June 2020, and the first section of the train is expected to begin operating on December 15 of this year.

It will have stations throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and will cover nearly 1,000 miles spanning through five states.

There will be a total of seven different sections with 22 stations along the way.

Reason For Delays In The Tulum To Cancun Route

The Maya Train project has been the subject of much criticism, particularly from environmental advocates.

The concern over the environment is part of the reason for the delay in the Tulum to Cancun route, which is Section 5 of the planned route.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador commented that, “In the case of section 5 it has indeed been more complex than we imagined because we are building so as not to affect underwater rivers, cenotes.”

This caution has apparently led to delays in constructing the train’s tracks.

Well, that's comes as no big surprise. From the start this is a project that was never fully developed and costed. It will be a burden to Mexico for generations.
