Which Of The 5 RIU Hotels In Cancun Is Right For You? Here’s What Travelers Reviews Say

Share The Article

Walk down the beach in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, and you’re bound to run into a RIU. The Spanish hotel giant is famous for its particular brand of all-inclusive fun, but choosing which one to book is where even savvy travelers get stuck. Think of the five RIU resorts in the Hotel Zone as siblings: they share the same last name, but each has a completely different personality—from the non-stop party animal to the sophisticated, quiet one.

Picking the wrong one is a recipe for a vacation mismatch. And to be clear, we’re not even talking about their cousins up in Costa Mujeres, a completely separate resort area. This guide is strictly for the five true Cancun siblings. Here at The Cancun Sun, we’ve scoured hundreds of recent, real-world traveler reviews to reveal the true personality of each RIU, so you can find your perfect match.

Riu Palace Kukulkan: For The Modern & Chic Relaxer

Riu Palace Kukulkan
  • The Vibe: This is the newest and most modern of the bunch. Think sophisticated, calm, and stylish.
  • Traveler Reviews Say: This is not a wild party resort. Travelers on Reddit consistently praise the stunning rooftop infinity pool and bar as a major highlight, perfect for a chill afternoon. The crowd is often couples and groups in their 30s and up looking for a high-quality, relaxed vacation. If you want a guaranteed party, this isn’t it. If you want a modern, clean, and relatively peaceful home base, this is your spot.
  • The Beach: Located on a beautiful, calmer stretch of water at the southern end of the Hotel Zone.
  • Best For: Couples who want a modern, upscale, and quiet all-inclusive experience.

Riu Palace Las Americas: For The Upgraded Party Animal

  • The Vibe: Classy, but here to party. It’s the more refined, adults-only version of its wilder neighbor, the Riu Cancun.
  • Traveler Reviews Say: This is the perfect “best of both worlds” resort. Travelers love that it has the higher-end “Palace” level food, drinks, and service, but with a very social and lively pool scene. A huge perk mentioned constantly is the exchange privilege with the Riu Cancun next door, meaning you can use their pools and bars for a full-on party, then retreat to your nicer resort.
  • The Beach: Great location on a calm stretch of water, right in the heart of the action.
  • Best For: Adults, couples, and groups who want a high-energy, social vacation but still value premium service and food.

Riu Cancun: For The Non-Stop, Budget-Conscious Partier

  • The Vibe: This is the epicenter of the party. It’s loud, it’s fun, it’s young, and it never stops.
  • Traveler Reviews Say: If your goal is to be within stumbling distance of Cancun’s main Party Center (Coco Bongo, The City, Mandala), this is your hotel. Reviews are filled with mentions of the high-energy pools, the constant music, and a crowd that is ready to have fun. It is not a “Palace” resort, so travelers note the food and rooms are more standard, but they agree you can’t beat the price for the prime party location. Don’t book this if you want peace and quiet.
  • The Beach: Shares the same great, calm beach area as the Las Americas.
  • Best For: Spring breakers, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and anyone on a budget whose #1 priority is partying.

Riu Caribe: For The Fun-Loving Family (On A Budget)

Riu Caribe
  • The Vibe: Active, family-friendly, and a great value after its recent makeover.
  • Traveler Reviews Say: The key takeaway from recent reviews is the massive 2024 renovation. The hotel is fresh, clean, and has a new “Riu Splash” water park area with slides, making it a huge hit with families and kids. It’s more affordable than the “Palace” resorts but offers a newer feel than the standard Riu Cancun. Its location is a bit further from the main party zone, which most guests see as a plus.
  • The Beach: Good beach, but can sometimes have rougher water than the resorts tucked into the “corner” of the “7”.
  • Best For: Families and groups looking for a fun, active vacation with lots of on-site amenities at a strong price point.

Riu Palace Peninsula: For The Traveler Who Wants Options

Riu Palace Peninsula
  • The Vibe: A large, sprawling resort with a little something for everyone.
  • Traveler Reviews Say: The defining feature of the Peninsula is its size and varied layout. It has multiple pools, including lively main pools and quieter, more secluded options. This makes it a great fit for a multi-generational family or a couple who wants the option to either join the party or find a quiet corner. The beach is noted as being beautiful, with calm, swimmable water.
  • The Beach: Excellent, calm beach perfect for swimming and relaxing.
  • Best For: Couples and families who want a high-end “Palace” experience but prefer a larger, more varied resort over a single-vibe hotel.

My favorite Riu resort in Cancun is the one that doesn't have sargassum in the beach, difficult to find because right now the authorities in Cancun lost the war trying to have the beaches clean off sargassum and the bad odor. That picture could be from years back. Add the huge drug problem there.
