More tourists means more fun—but also more mischief. Cancun police are cracking down on bad behavior in the Hotel Zone to keep your vacation safe.
Police and civic officials in Cancun are reporting a noticeable spike in minor arrests this July, especially in the Hotel Zone where most tourists spend their time.
But don’t worry—if you’re here to relax, soak up the sun, and keep things chill, you’ve got nothing to fear.

Most Tourists Won’t Be Affected
According to local civic court director Jorge Rivero Pech, arrests for administrative violations—like public urination, fighting, or smoking marijuana—are up 15% in the first two weeks of July alone. Roughly 100 people have already been referred to a civic judge just this month.
But here’s the thing: almost all of these incidents involve public intoxication or drug use.
In other words, unless you’re partying a little too hard or doing something clearly illegal, you probably won’t even notice the increased police presence.

What’s Behind the Spike?
Summer break brings an influx of visitors to Cancun’s beaches and bars, and with that comes a natural rise in poor decisions made under the influence. Rivero Pech explained that most of the recent arrests involve people who were drunk or high—often both—and behaving badly.
He added that the surge is expected to continue through the season. “People are more active in recreation, such as parties and other activities,” he said. “So we do believe it will increase somewhat in the coming weeks.”
When things get out of hand—especially if someone gets seriously hurt—the case is escalated to the State Attorney General’s Office. But for most incidents, it’s just a few hours in a civic court and a fine.

Don’t Be That Tourist
Let’s be honest—no one wants to spend their vacation dealing with police. Here’s how to stay on the right side of the law while still having a great time:
- Don’t light up. Cannabis use is still illegal in Mexico and is one of the top reasons tourists get arrested.
- Use the bathroom before you hit the beach. Public urination might seem harmless after a few beers, but it’ll get you fined—or worse.
- Keep the party friendly. Fights, even small ones, can land you in front of a judge.
And yes, the civic courts are absolutely checking if you’re drunk or under the influence of other substances when you get picked up.

More Patrols, Not More Problems
Police are simply being more visible this summer, especially in nightlife areas and along the busiest stretches of the Hotel Zone. This isn’t about cracking down on tourists—it’s about keeping Cancun safe and fun for everyone.
If anything, you might notice quicker response times, better coordination, and a safer vibe in popular spots.

Our Take
At the end of the day, Cancun is still one of the safest and most exciting beach destinations in the world—as long as you use common sense.
The vast majority of travelers won’t face any issues. But if your vacation plans include public partying or pushing legal boundaries, don’t be surprised if the local authorities step in.
Stay smart, stay respectful, and Cancun will treat you right.
