The moment you step out of the transfer van and into the lobby of your Cancun resort, the assessment begins. You aren’t just a guest anymore; you are about to be categorized.
The front desk agent types on their keyboard, smiles, and reaches into a drawer. This is the moment of truth. They pull out a plastic or fabric wristband and snap it onto your wrist.

For the next week, that strip of plastic is your identity. It tells the bartender which alcohol to pour you. It tells the hostess which restaurants you can enter. And, perhaps most importantly, it tells the security guards which pools you are allowed to lounge by.
While most travelers know the difference between the “Standard” band and the “Club Level” band, there is a third category that almost nobody talks about. Here at The Cancun Sun, we call it the “Unicorn Bracelet.”
Here is the insider breakdown of the Cancun caste system, and how to spot the secret VIPs walking among you.

The Standard Hierarchy: Blue vs. Silver vs. Gold
Every resort has its own color scheme, but the hierarchy is universal.
1. The “Standard” Band This is the baseline. It gets you into the buffet, the main pool, and your room. It usually signals to the bartender to pour the “house rail” liquor (the stuff in the plastic bottles). If you see a long line at a restaurant and wonder why people are waiting, look at their wrists—they are usually rocking the standard color.
2. The “Club Level” Band This is the upgrade. Whether it is “Diamond Club” (Royalton), “Preferred Club” (Dreams), or “Excellence Club,” these bands are distinct (often Silver, Gold, or Black).
- The Perks: As we noted in our breakdown of the Moon Palace complex, the upgraded band unlocks the hidden doors. Private check-in lounges, exclusive beach areas with better chairs, and premium liquor in the room.
3. The “Under 18” Band Usually bright neon or distinctively patterned. This is a flashing red light for bartenders: No Alcohol.

The Secret Tier: The “Unicorn” Bracelet
Then, there is the anomaly.
You are sitting at the pool bar. Everyone around you has a Blue band (Standard) or a Gold band (Club). Then, someone walks up wearing a White band. Or maybe a Metallic Purple one. Or a woven fabric band when everyone else has plastic.
You look around. Nobody else has it.
This is what we call the “Unicorn Bracelet.” It is not listed on the website booking engine. You cannot select it as an upgrade at checkout.

Who wears it?
- The “VIPs”: These are often celebrities, high-profile influencers, or travel journalists staying at the resort for a feature story.
- The Owners: At timeshare properties, top-tier owners who have invested six figures often get a distinct color to signal “I basically own this place.”
- The Fixers: Wedding planners or event organizers who need unrestricted access to every corner of the property.
What does it do? It is essentially “Boss Mode” for the resort.

- No Reservations: While you are waking up at 7:00 AM to book the steakhouse on the app, the Unicorn walks in at 7:30 PM and gets the best table immediately.
- Top Shelf Everything: The bartender doesn’t ask “house or premium?” They reach for the Grey Goose automatically.
- The “Yes” Factor: Staff are trained to recognize these specific colors. The answer to almost any request from a Unicorn band is “Yes, right away.”

Can You Get One?
Unless you have a million followers on TikTok or you are writing a review for Travel Off Path, probably not.
However, you can simulate the experience. If you want the “Unicorn” treatment without the secret color, you have to buy your way into the highest published tier. At resorts like Grand Velas, everyone gets treated like royalty, but at tiered resorts, booking the “Club Level” is the only way to avoid envy.
As we covered in our report on high-end resort costs, the price difference for Club Level is often worth it just to skip the lines and access the “hidden” pools.

The One “Cheat” Code That Beats The Bracelet
If you are stuck with a Standard band and want better service, there is one color that speaks louder than the plastic on your wrist: Green (Cash).
Tipping is the great equalizer in Cancun. If you tip your bartender or server well at the start of your shift, the color of your bracelet matters significantly less. A few dollars can turn “house tequila” into “Don Julio” very quickly. As we detailed in our guide to the new tipping standards, strategic tipping can unlock a level of service that rivals even the Unicorns.

The Verdict
Next time you are people-watching in the lobby, keep an eye on the wrists. If you spot a color that doesn’t match the crowd, you have found a Unicorn. Just don’t ask them where they got it—unless you are ready to buy a timeshare or start a YouTube channel.’
If you are planning a trip soon, check availability first—as we reported, popular resorts are selling out fast, regardless of what color bracelet you want.
