Second only to the unbeatable Cancun, Playa Del Carmen continues to be an extremely popular area for tourists.
The state of Quintana Roo continues to record brilliant numbers of visitors coming to the area, and with the huge flow of flights arriving at the destination this summer, Playa Del Carmen carves itself out as a much sought-after location for everyone.
Travel to Playa del Carmen and the wider Mexican Caribbean is up! However, the president of the Association of Small Hotels in Playa Del Carmen highlighted that the summer season had not gone as planned for many small business owners, who are now considering the closing of their accommodation.
These were for smaller hotels located in the downtown area of Playa del Carmen. So if numbers are down in town but up overall, more tourists are choosing beachfront resorts and vacation rentals in the area.
Bookings for all-inclusive hotels and large resorts are always a popular choice for travelers from the United States.
Though there will be many reasons for this growing trend, one will be largely down to the convenience it offers its guests.
Americans are looking to have everything they need right at their fingertips, preventing them from venturing outside of their comfort zones in any way when planning their vacation time.
This is largely due to the guaranteed safety of these resorts, which often have 24-hour security detail on site, and are situated in busy, well-known locations within Playa Del Carmen.
The area had recently seen an uptick in crime this year, with petty theft being a number one concern for tourists.

Thanks to the actions of the local government, led by Mayor Lili Campos, officials quickly dealt with the growing problem and made sure that safety and security measures were heightened.
Though Playa Del Carmen’s crime rates seem to be decreasing, many visitors continue to book large beachfront resorts in order to gain peace of mind, in the hope that their vacations won’t be affected by such things.
Many resorts and all-inclusives in the area are also found to be offering special deals to promote their hotels, meaning that tourists are able to stretch their budgets further, with the costs of food and drink being included in the price of their vacations, a major plus for families looking to save money during the cost of living crisis that the world is currently experiencing.
Major hotel chains such as the Hilton and Hyatt are responding to this demand by refurbishing and reopening more locations in the hope of catching more tourists who are looking for this type of experience, with some like the Hilton offering everything from state-of-the-art fitness centers, beach clubs, endless restaurants and even luxury spa facilities.
This popularity does have an effect on other hotels in the area however, with Osner Arjona, the president of the Association of Small Hotels in Playa Del Carmen, highlighting that the summer season had not gone as planned for many small business owners, who are now considering the closing of their accommodation.
He stated, “I think the main factors by which the center of Playa Del Carmen was affected were the disorder that has been experienced in terms of itinerant businesses, a little more noise than in normal hours. (Even) some of our colleagues have seen the need to evaluate the closure of their businesses, and this means that entire families are affected by their income and with all the benefits that small hotels provide to our collaborators.”
He also highlighted that vacation rentals had also become a popular alternative for tourists, which creates unfair competition for small hotel owners, who must go through several requirements from the government in order to meet standards, whereas vacation rentals do not.
“What we are looking for is that there is a balance in all the companies that provide tourist services, we want them to be regulated and they can soundproof their premises (in the case of bars and restaurants) so that in this way we can all function well,” he stressed.
For now though, beachfront and all-inclusive resorts seem to reign supreme in Playa Del Carmen due to their cost-effective, safety-focused nature, meaning that all visitors feel well looked after in the busy, well-populated hotel zone, leaving them to enjoy the peace and luxury of the Mexican Caribbean in style!
